About Vacuum cleaner
A Machine That Sucks Up Dirt
Vacuum cleaner is a machine that sucks up dirt and dust from the floor together with air.
It even sucks up tiny bits of dirt stuck deep inside rugs.
It is a home appliance you really need for everyday cleaning.
How a Vacuum cleaner Works
In the 1st and 2nd coloring pages, you pull the main body on the floor using a hose.
A motor inside the main body pulls in air, and dirt sucked from the head collects inside.
The bumpy hose bends freely, so it can reach many places.
Different Kinds of Vacuum cleaners
Lightweight stick-type Vacuum cleaners, where the handle and main body are combined, are also popular now.
There are cordless Vacuum cleaners that run on batteries, and robot Vacuum cleaners that move around the room and clean all by themselves.
Brooms and Dustpans in the Old Days
Before Vacuum cleaners became common, people swept up dirt with a broom and picked it up with a dustpan.
For tatami rooms, they swept along the lines of the tatami mats with a broom.
Even today, brooms and dustpans are often used to clean entryways and yards.
Helping with Cleaning
Cleaning becomes easier if you put away toys and books on the floor before using the Vacuum cleaner.
If a Vacuum cleaner sucks up small toys or Lego blocks, it can break.
Try helping out by putting things away and using the Vacuum cleaner as a team!
Tips for Vacuuming
Move the head of the Vacuum cleaner slowly back and forth to suck up dirt really well.
On carpets, vacuuming against the pile gets out the dirt deep inside.
The Sound of a Vacuum cleaner
The motor in a Vacuum cleaner spins fast to suck in air strongly, so it makes a loud noise.
Quiet Vacuum cleaners that make less noise are also being made now.
When you use it late at night or early in the morning, think about the people around you and be careful with the noise.

There are 3 coloring pages: a Vacuum cleaner, a girl using a Vacuum cleaner, and an old-fashioned broom and dustpan.
Try coloring them while thinking about how you help clean up at home!
How to Color Vacuum cleaner
Color the main body nicely
Many main bodies of Vacuum cleaner are white with blue or red parts.
The Vacuum cleaner used as the model for the second picture had a white body with a blue lid.
Try coloring the lid of the round body in your favorite color.
Color the hose with stripes
For the bumpy hose, color it light gray and make the shadows in the bumps a little darker. That will make it look like it bends smoothly!
Color the straight pipe silver or gray.
Have fun with the room too
Try coloring the sofa in the second picture light green, the rug cream, and the houseplant green.
If you color the girl's clothes with a yellow sweater and blue pants, it will look just like the photo.
Broom and dustpan
Color the bristles of the broom in the third picture ocher or light brown, and color the string on the handle white.
If you color the metal dustpan gray and leave some white lines, it will look shiny and bright!
Try drawing some trash too
Draw some little bits of trash and dust in front of the head of Vacuum cleaner in the first picture. Make it look like Vacuum cleaner is sucking them up!
If you draw wind lines, it will look like it is sucking them up with lots of power.
The girl's face
Color the girl's cheeks in the second picture a little bit with light pink, and her face will look so cute!
Try coloring her hair dark brown or black.
Patterns on the curtains
Leave the curtains in the second picture white, and color only the flower patterns at the bottom with light pink or light yellow. That will make the room look soft and cozy.
Fun Facts About Vacuum cleaner
Japan’s first Vacuum cleaner
The very first electric Vacuum cleaner made in Japan came out in 1931 from Shibaura Engineering Works (now Toshiba).
You used it standing up by pushing it with the handle.
It spread to many homes in the 1960s.
Paper bags and cyclonic power
Some Vacuum cleaner models collect the sucked-up dust in a paper bag, while cyclonic models spin the air like a whirlpool to separate the dust.
With cyclonic models, you can see the dust inside, so you know how much you cleaned!
What brooms are made of
Many Japanese brooms are made by bunching together the tops of a grass called broomcorn.
Craftspeople make them carefully by weaving each strand one by one.
A good broom can last for many years!
Robot Vacuum cleaner
A robot Vacuum cleaner checks the shape of the room by itself while moving all around to clean every corner.
When it finishes cleaning, it goes back to its charger all by itself.
It can even clean for you while no one is at home!
