History and Theme of the Story

This story is a traditional fairytale with no known author, but its main message is "having the courage to face danger" and "the power to change your own fate."

  • Theme and Lesson: This story can be seen as a growth story. Jack, a poor boy, grabs a chance with the magic beans and takes action to climb the huge stalk to find success. It teaches us that "if you take action instead of just waiting, new paths will open up for you."

Story Summary

A poor boy named Jack lives with his mother. One day, he goes to the market to sell their cow because she stops making milk. But a strange old man tricks him along the way. Jack gives up the cow and gets five magic beans instead.

Her angry mother threw the beans out into the yard. But the next morning, the beans grew high into the sky and became a giant beanstalk. Jack climbed up the tree and reached a mansion above the clouds where a human-eating giant lived.

With help from the giant's wife, Jack steals the giant's treasures in three separate trips.

  1. Bags filled with gold and silver coins
  2. A hen that lays golden eggs
  3. A magic harp that plays by itself

When he tries to steal the harp the third time, the harp calls out and tells the giant, so the giant chases him. Jack rushes back to the ground, chops down the beanstalk with an axe, and the giant chasing him falls to the ground and dies.

After that, Jack became rich thanks to the stolen treasures, started working hard, and lived happily ever after with his mother.

How to Color Jack and the Beanstalk

When you color, the trick is to show how big the giant beanstalk is and bring out the magical world above the clouds.

How to Color Jack and the Beanstalk

  • Beanstalk:
    • For the stalk, use dark green and deep green. This shows both the thickness of a tree trunk and the freshness of a vine.
    • For the huge leaves, mix yellow-green and bright green to make them bright and full of life.
    • For the beans, mix a slightly vivid green and blue. This makes them feel like they have magic power!
  • Clouds and Sky:
    • For the clouds, use white as the base and add shadows with light sky blue or light purple. This will give them a fluffy 3D look and a mystical feel of being high up in the sky.
    • If you color the sky with bright blue or light sky blue, it will show how fresh and cool it feels high above the clouds.
  • The Giant:
    • Color the skin with dark peach or light brown to show off his rugged body.
    • If you color his clothes with dark colors (like brown or gray), it will show off the giant's scary and powerful feel even more.
  • Jack and the Beanstalk:
    • If you color his clothes in bright colors like light blue or light brown that fit a lively boy, he will look small but brave next to the giant!
