About Cyclamen

The Queen of Gorgeous Flowers That Bloom in Winter

Cyclamen is a flower known for blooming with bright flowers during the cold winter. It is also called "Kagaribibana" because the shape of the flower looks like a bonfire.

Origin of the Name and English Name

The name Cyclamen is related to the shape of its bulb and how the flowers move.

  • English name: It is called "Cyclamen" in English too.

  • Where the English name comes from: People say the scientific name "Cyclamen" comes from a Greek word, "kyklos," which means "circle" or "ring." It gets this name because its bulb is round, and it has a neat habit where its stem curls up into a circle to bury its seeds in the dirt after the flower blooms!

  • Another Japanese name: One Japanese name for it is "Kagaribibana" (Bonfire Flower). This name was given because the way the petals curve back and point upward looks just like a flame.

What are its traits and life?

Cyclamen is a very popular potted flower that brightens up your room in winter.

  • When it blooms: It mainly blooms during the cold months from autumn to early spring.

  • Leaf Patterns: Heart-shaped or round leaves often have beautiful silver or white spotty patterns. You can enjoy looking at them even when there are no flowers!

  • How to spend the summer: Cyclamen do not like the heat, so during the hot summer time, they turn into a bulb and go to sleep.

When and Where You Can Find Cyclamen

  • Where it lives: Cyclamen mostly grows wild in cooler places around the Mediterranean coast. In Japan, people love to enjoy this flower indoors during winter.

How to Color Cyclamen

How to Choose Colors: Use Bright Red or Pink, and Leaf Patterns!

For this Cyclamen coloring page, try to use the gorgeous flower colors and the tricky leaf patterns to make it look great!

  • Basic Colors: Choose mostly red, deep pink, and white for the flowers, and dark green and silver for the leaf patterns.

Colors for each part:

  • Petals:

    • Vibrant colors: Color nicely and evenly with bright colors like red, deep pink, and purple. If you make the base (the center) of the petals a little darker, the flower will look sharp and neat.

    • White flowers: If you choose white, try adding a shadow to the back of the petals with a very light pink or light blue. It will make the neat white color stand out!

  • Leaves: Color the base of the leaves dark green. Then, color the center veins and spotted patterns with light green or gray (silver). This will make the leaves look beautiful!

  • Stems: The stems support the flowers and leaves. You can color them light red or green. Making them thin gives them a delicate look!

How to color with a 3D feel: Show the movement of the curved-back petals!

To show the movement of the curled-back petals and the strength growing from the bulb, let's think about shadows and light. Places that will be in shadow:

  • Add "shadows" using a darker color than your main color to places where the light doesn't reach. Try the curved inside of the petals, where the leaves overlap, and the base of the flowers to make your flowers look 3D!

Where to put it in the sun:

  • If you use bright colors or leave white spots on the shiny parts, like the tips of the petals and the front of the leaves, you can make them look nice and shiny!

Let's Add Texture!

Colored pencils: For the petals, if you color them gently and evenly, you can make them look smooth just like velvet. Leaves: If you add light and dark shades along the lines of the leaves, the leaves will look lively and full of detail!
