A Big Change from Green Bodies! The Red-eared slider The Red-eared slider is a turtle friend that many of you might know well. When they are babies, their whole body is a pretty green color, so they are often called "green turtles." But they have a cool feature: their body color changes as they grow up! These turtles are great at swimming in the water and love soaking up the sun. Where They Live and How They Spend Their Days They used to live in warm places around the Mississippi River in America. But now you can spot them all over Japan in ponds, rivers, and castle moats. They like to spend their days in places with calm water. They Love Sunbathing: On sunny days, they climb onto logs or rocks floating in the pond and line up together to "dry their shells." They Eat Everything: They are omnivores that love both meat and veggies. They happily munch on whatever is in front of them, like small fish, shrimp, water plants, and insects. Cool Features of the Red-eared slider The Red-eared slider has a few easy-to-spot features that make it different from other turtles. Red Ear-like Patterns: Their biggest feature is the bright red stripe pattern behind their eyes (on the side of their head). This is where the name "Red-eared" comes from. It's actually a pattern, not a real ear! Patterns on Their Tummies: The bottom of their shell (their tummy side) is yellowish with lots of black round patterns. Each turtle has a different shape and number of these patterns! An Important Promise The Red-eared slider is a very strong turtle that lives for a long time. Because too many of them have grown in Japan's ponds and rivers, they are taking away food and homes from native Japanese turtles. So, they are now listed under a special rule called "Conditional Designated Invasive Alien Species." This rule says that once you start keeping one as a pet, you must never release it into natural rivers or ponds. You must promise to take good care of it with responsibility until the very end. How to Choose Colors When you color your Red-eared slider coloring page, think about how old the turtle is and what kind of personality it has! Baby Turtles: When you color a baby turtle, use lots of bright yellow-green and green. Their shells have yellow lines, so it is fun to layer yellow over the green. Grown-up Red-eared Sliders: Big turtles have dark green, brown, or blackish colors. Choosing cooler, darker colors makes them look big and strong. The Main Feature: "Red Ears": Use a marker or a dark crayon to make the spots behind their eyes bright red! Making this part stand out the most is the secret to making a great Red-eared slider. Make the Shell Look 3D! A turtle's shell is round and bumpy. If you make it look 3D, your turtle will look super cool! Shell Patterns: A turtle shell has a pattern split into little sections. Color the middle of each section with bright green or brown. Then, make the edges around the lines a bit darker. This will make the shell look bumpy and real! Sunlight: Leave a tiny bit of white paper uncolored on top of the shell. It will look just like sunlight shining bright on the shell! Try Drawing a Background Think about where your turtle is and draw a fun background. Is it sunbathing on a rock by the pond? Draw some water and water plants around it! Is it swimming through the water? Add some water bubbles and little fish. Your coloring page will look like it is ready to move! Big changes when they grow up! Males turn black As male Red-eared sliders grow up, their bodies get darker and darker. This is called "melanism." When they turn totally black, their green color from when they were little disappears. Even the red marks behind their eyes can fade away! It is surprising, almost like they transformed into a totally different turtle. They love the sun! They get sick without sunbathing Turtles stay still on rocks to sunbathe. They are not just playing! They must do this to stay alive. When they get sunlight (ultraviolet rays), their bodies make vitamins that make their shells and bones strong. If they do not get enough sun, their shells can get soft and sick. No ear holes? They feel sound through vibrations Even though they are named "Red-eared slider," they do not have ear holes or ears like humans. But that does not mean they cannot hear! They feel vibrations from the ground and water using special parts just under the skin on the side of their face. That is how they know what is happening around them.
