About Ginkgo nuts

What Kind of Plant Is It?

Ginkgo nuts come from very big trees whose leaves turn a pretty yellow in autumn. They are well known for growing edible "Ginkgo nuts". Ginkgo trees are even called living fossils because they have been growing on Earth since ancient times.

The Mystery of Ginkgo Nuts

Ginkgo trees come in boy trees (male) and girl trees (female). Ginkgo nuts only grow on the girl trees. When you peel off the soft outer skin of Ginkgo nuts, a hard shell comes out. Break that shell open, and you will find a green nut inside!

The outer skin has a unique smell, but the nut inside is soft, chewy, and super yummy when you roast it or cook it with rice.

Leaf Colors

The leaves of Ginkgo nuts have a cute shape, just like a fan. When autumn comes, these leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow. Then, one day, all the leaves drop at once, making the ground look like a yellow carpet. It is so pretty!

Where Do They Grow?

Trees that grow Ginkgo nuts are very tough and do not get sick easily, so they are planted in many places across Japan. You can see them as giant trees in places where lots of people gather, like parks, Shinto shrines, and Buddhist temple grounds. There are also places where many of them are planted along the road.
