The Peacock Pansy is a butterfly that belongs to the Graphiini tribe in the gossamer-winged butterfly family. Its beauty is famous all over the world, and collectors even call it a "flying jewel."

The English name for the Peacock Pansy is "Imperial Hairstreak." Its scientific name is sometimes written as "Arcas imperialis."

This name comes from the gorgeous, bright metallic-shiny pattern on the underside of its wings, which looks just like peacock feathers! The Peacock Pansy is a little bigger than Japanese gossamer-winged butterflies.

• The wingspan changes depending on the type, but it is usually about 3 to 5 centimeters wide.
• The Peacock Pansy has thin, long tail-like parts called tail filaments. These tails flutter gently, and people think they help protect the Peacock Pansy from birds and other animals.

The base color on the underside of the wings is mostly dark brown, gray, or black. On top of that, there are green or blue band-like patterns that shine like iridescent beetles, changing color depending on the angle you look at them! Plus, there are eyespots on the edges of the wings, too.

Where does it live?

Friends of the Peacock Pansy mainly live in tropical forests from Central America to South America.

• Main Home: The rainforests and forests of countries like Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico.
• The Peacock Pansy does not live in Japanese prefectures or places. It lives high up in the trees of tropical forests in South America.

What do they eat?

• Adult Peacock Pansy butterflies mainly live on flower nectar. They also gather at spots in the forest where tree sap flows, or around rotten fruit.
