About Red fox
Smart and Speedy! The Red fox!
The Red fox is an animal in the dog family. You can spot them by their sharp faces and big, fluffy tails. They often show up in old Japanese folk tales, so they are very familiar to us. Red fox living in Japan have different names depending on where they live!
Friends of the Red fox
There are two main types of Red fox in Japan. Their looks are a little different depending on whether they live in a cold place or not.
- Ezo Red fox: This Red fox mainly lives in Hokkaido. To survive the cold winter, its body is a bit bigger than the ones on the main island, and its winter fur is super fluffy and long.
- Japanese Red fox: This Red fox lives on the main island, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Compared to the Ezo Red fox, its body is a little smaller and looks slim.
There are many kinds of Red fox all over the world. Their fur colors and sizes are slightly different to match the weather where they live. They are all the same Red fox, but each one is very unique!
Where Do They Live?
The Red fox lives in many places, like forests, woods, grassy fields, and even near towns where people live! They are very smart and great at adjusting to new places. They are mostly active at night, but they sometimes come out during the day if the area is safe.
What Do They Eat?
The Red fox is an omnivore, which means it eats everything! They catch small animals like mice and rabbits, and they also love insects, bird eggs, nuts, and fruits. They are great hunters and can even jump high to catch their prey.
Features of the Red fox
The Red fox has many cool body features!
- Fur Color: The fur on their backs and bellies is a lovely orange or brown, and the fur under their chins and chests is white.
- Ears and Legs: The backs of their ears and the tips of their legs are black. It looks like they are wearing black socks! The Japanese Red fox is not quite as black there.
- Tail: Their long, fluffy tail helps them keep their balance when running. When it gets cold, they wrap it around themselves like a scarf to stay warm! The tip of the tail is white, which is a cute feature. People say they use this white tail tip to spot each other!
Raising Babies in Dens
In spring, the Red fox digs a hole in the dirt or under tree roots to make a den. They give birth and raise their babies inside! Father foxes are known to help mother foxes raise the babies, too.
Red fox Calls
A fox barks and yelps like "kon-kon," "ken-ken," or "gyan!" If you hear a loud scream-like sound at night, it might be a fox!
How to Color Red fox
How to Choose Your Colors
When you color the Red fox, think of its famous colors. A pretty orange or brown will be your main color!
- Body Color: Try using orange or bright brown for most of the back, face, and tail. Layer your colored pencils a little bit to make the fur look fluffy. The Red fox and the Ezo red fox have brown fur that looks almost red.
- Belly and Chin: Color the belly, chest, and under the chin with white, or just leave the paper blank. If you blend the edges into the orange body a bit, it will look natural!
- Ears and Legs: Color the backs of the ears and the tips of the legs with a strong black. This is what makes the Red fox look so cool!
- Tip of the Tail: Do not forget to color the tip of the tail white! Coloring this part white makes it look just like a real Red fox.
- Nose and Eyes: Color the nose black, and give it cute, round eyes with brown or black.
Let’s Make the Fur Look Fluffy!
The best thing about the Red fox is its super fluffy fur. If you color by drawing lots of short lines, it will really look like fur!
- If you use colored pencils: Try layering orange, ocher, and brown little by little. Follow the way the fur grows as you color! You can also change how dark it looks by pressing hard or soft.
- If you use crayons: After you color, try scratching lines into it with a toothpick or something pointy. It is a fun way to draw fur!
Let’s Draw a Background!
Try drawing the forest or field where the Red fox lives in the background.
- Forests and Woods: Draw green trees and brown ground. If it is an autumn forest, adding red and yellow leaves will look wonderful!
- Grassy Fields: Draw a field using yellow and yellow-green, and add cute little blooming flowers!
- Night Scene: Red fox animals are often active at night. So coloring the background dark blue or black with a yellow moon and lots of stars is great too!
Make Your Very Own Red fox!
You do not have to stick to real colors. It is lots of fun to use any colors you like! A pink Red fox or a rainbow Red fox would be awesome too! Have fun and color freely!
