Iguanodon, the Plant-Eating Dinosaur!

Iguanodon was a plant-eating dinosaur that lived long, long ago in a time when there were lots of dinosaurs.

What Does the Name Iguanodon Mean?

In English, Iguanodon is written as "Iguanodon". "Iguano" comes from the iguana, which is a type of lizard, and "don" means "tooth". So, the name Iguanodon actually means "iguana tooth". It was given this name because the teeth of Iguanodon looked just like the teeth of an iguana!

When Did It Live?

Iguanodon lived during the Cretaceous period, about 140 million to 120 million years ago. During this time, there were lots of plants growing, and many different dinosaurs lived together.

Where Was It Discovered?

Iguanodon was one of the very first dinosaurs found in England. A long time ago, when people found dinosaur bones, they tried to imagine what it looked like and drew pictures of it.

Super Big!

Iguanodon was a really big dinosaur.

• It was about half as long as a bus (about 9 meters long)!
• It was as tall as an elephant (about 4 meters high).
• And it weighed as much as 2 cars (about 4 to 5 tons)!

Special Thumb Spikes!

Iguanodon had a big spike on each of its thumbs. People think it used them to pick tree nuts and leaves, or to protect itself from enemies. It was just like a knife!

How Did It Walk?

People think that Iguanodon usually walked on 4 legs. But when it wanted to run fast or eat leaves high up, it could stand and walk on its 2 back legs!

Teeth Made for Eating Plants!

Inside the mouth of Iguanodon, there were lots of flat teeth for grinding up plants. With these teeth, it could easily chew up tough plants, too.

What Did It Eat?

Iguanodon ate many kinds of plants, like grass, leaves, and tree branches. It had to eat a lot to keep its huge body strong!

Did It Live in a Herd?

Sometimes, many fossils of Iguanodon are found together in one place. This is proof that Iguanodon might have lived together in a herd. Living in a herd made it easier to stay safe from enemies and to find food.

A Long Tail!

The tail of Iguanodon was very long so it wouldn't fall over. It used its tail really well to balance its body and change its running speed.

• 緑色（明るい緑、黄緑）：植物の中に隠れているようなイメージ。

• 灰色（薄い灰色）：石や岩のようなごつごつしたイメージ。
• これらの色を何色か組み合わせて使うと、もっとリアルになるよ。

• 歯は、植物をすりつぶす平らな歯だから、白い色や、少し黄ばんだ色にすると本物っぽいね。
• 舌は、薄いピンクや赤にすると、元気な感じが出るよ。

立体感を出す塗り方：「かげ」と「ひかり」を意識しよう！

このIguanodonの絵にも、体の線がたくさん描かれているから、この線をヒントに「かげ」をつけてみよう。

▼かげになる場所

• 筋肉のへこんでいる部分（足の内側、首の下など）
• アゴの下や首のしわ
• 体の下側（地面に近いところ）
• しわになっている溝の部分

こういったところに、メインの色より少し濃い色を塗ると、もっこりした立体感が出るよ！
逆に、筋肉がもり上がっているところや、背中のように光が当たりやすいところは、少し明るい色を残したり、薄い色を塗ったりすると、より立体的に見えるよ。

なめらかな皮膚の質感を出そう！

Iguanodonは、ティラノサウルスほどごつごつした皮膚ではなかったと考えられているよ。 この絵にも、皮膚の線が細かく描かれているから、その線を丁寧に塗っていくと、なめらかな感じが出るよ。 色鉛筆なら、力を入れすぎずに、均一に色を塗ると、より本物っぽくなるよ。

絵の具や色鉛筆、画材のコツ！

色鉛筆：力を入れると濃く、力を抜くと薄く塗れるから、「かげ」と「ひかり」の表現がしやすいよ。同じ色でも、重ねて塗ると深みが出るよ。 クレヨン：少し厚めに塗ると、しっかりとした感じが出るよ。指でこすると、色をぼかすこともできるよ。 絵の具（水彩）：水をたくさん使うと薄く透けた感じに、水を少なくすると濃くはっきり塗れるよ。乾いてからもう一度重ね塗りすると、色に深みが出るよ。
