About Roast chicken

Chicken legs are stars, too! Roast chicken

Roast chicken is a dish made by slowly cooking chicken in an oven or grill. A whole chicken baked "as one big piece" is called a Roast chicken. A tasty "chicken leg with the bone" is also called a Roast chicken! In Japan, when Christmas comes, you can see lots of yummy Roast chicken legs with handles at supermarkets and convenience stores. The skin is crispy, the meat inside is juicy, and it often has a sweet and savory sauce on it.

Types and differences

There are two main types of Roast chicken.

  • Whole chicken: A whole bird baked all at once. It looks grand and makes a great main dish for a party. It is so much fun to slice and share with everyone!
  • Leg (chicken leg with the bone): Just the leg part baked by itself. Since everyone can hold their own piece to eat, this type is more popular in Japanese homes! It combines the handle part called the "drum" and the meaty part called the "thigh."

How to Color Roast chicken

How to choose yummy-looking colors

When you color a thigh Roast chicken, try to make it look shiny like it has a tasty sauce on it!

  • Skin color: If it is salty, use golden brown or light brown. If it has a shiny teriyaki sauce, use dark brown or reddish-brown to make it look delicious!
  • Shine: Leave the highest, roundest part of the meat white without coloring it. It will look like shiny sauce or juice! This is the secret to making it look juicy!
  • Bone handle: Color the bone sticking out of the meat white or cream color. If it has aluminum foil wrapped around it to hold, color it gray (silver) to make it look real!
  • Crispy spots: Layer a little bit of black or dark brown on the edges of the skin and near the bone to make burned spots. It will look like you can almost smell the yummy roasted meat!

Make your plate look bright and fun

Around your Roast chicken, you can draw or color side dishes like french fries (yellow), colorful parsley (green), and cherry tomatoes (red). It will look just like a feast at a restaurant!

Fun Facts About Roast chicken

The difference between "roast" and "fried"

Both are popular chicken dishes, but you make them differently! "Roast chicken" is baked in an oven. "Fried chicken" is covered in flour batter and fried in oil.
With Roast chicken, extra fat drips away, so you can enjoy the yummy taste of the meat itself.

Why are chicken legs more popular than a whole bird in Japan?

In Japan, not many homes have a big oven like in other countries. People say chicken legs with the bone became popular because they are easy to cook in a frying pan or a small grill! Juicy leg meat is very popular in Japan. Eating one whole leg each means no fighting over the meat, which might be another reason people love it!

What is the decoration on the bone?

The white, frilly paper decoration on the bone handle is called a "chop flower." It is not just to look pretty! It is also a clever idea to keep your hands from getting sticky when you hold it.
