About Firefly squid

Shining Blue in the Dark Sea! The Mysterious Firefly squid

The Firefly squid is a very small squid that glows beautifully like a firefly, mostly on its belly. The main body length is about 5 to 7 centimeters for females, and about 4 to 5 centimeters for males. They usually live in the cold, dark deep sea where light cannot reach. But when spring comes, many of them gather near the shore to lay eggs. Seeing the night sea glow blue all over is like the Milky Way in the ocean, and it is very magical.

Characteristics and Habits of the Firefly squid

The Firefly squid has many mysterious characteristics and habits that are different from regular squid.

  • Small body: Even an adult Firefly squid weighs only about 10 grams. It is a very small and cute creature.
  • Lots of light organs: They have about 1,000 tiny dots called "light organs" on their body (especially on the belly side) to make light. Large light organs are placed especially on the belly side and at the tips of the bottom two arms (the 4th arms) out of their 10 arms.
  • Lifespan is one year: In fact, the Firefly squid lives for only one year. Born in spring, they finish their short life in the following spring after leaving behind the next generation.

Toyama Bay and the Firefly squid

"Toyama Bay" in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, is famous as the place where the most Firefly squid gather in the world. On spring nights, the sight of many Firefly squid washing ashore and glowing blue is called "Firefly squid Minage" (Firefly squid throwing themselves ashore), and the sea surface where Firefly squid swarm in Toyama Bay is registered as a national special natural monument.

How to Color Firefly squid

How to Choose Colors

When you color your Firefly squid coloring page, think about whether you want to draw it in the daytime or glowing at night!

  • Usual Body Color: When the Firefly squid is not glowing in the sea, it has a slightly see-through reddish-brown or purplish color. If you add dark brown dots here and there, it will look just like a real Firefly squid.
  • Glowing Color: When the Firefly squid glows, it becomes a very pretty blue or blue-green. Try coloring the whole body light blue or blue to show its bright glow.
  • Eyes and Light Organs: Its eyes are big and round, and sometimes look a little green. Use yellow or white for the glowing dots on its arm tips and belly to make them stand out. It will look like it is really shiny and glowing!

Let's Create a Dark Sea!

The Firefly squid glows in the dark sea, so making a cool background will make the light stand out even more.

  • Shadows and Light: Color the middle of the Firefly squid's body with light blue, and make it darker blue toward the outside. This makes it look like light is shining from inside its body.
  • The Sea Around It: Try coloring the sea in the background dark with navy blue or black. The darker the background, the more the Firefly squid's blue light stands out and looks cool!

Try Creative Backgrounds

Draw sea waves in the background, or add other deep-sea creatures that live together. Imagine many Firefly squid swimming side by side or gathering near the shore, and have fun building your own world!

Tips for Enjoying Your Coloring Page!

You do not have to stick to real colors! It is also fun to make a Firefly squid in your favorite rainbow colors, gold, or pink. Create your very own special "Glowing Squid"!

Fun Facts About Firefly squid

The glowing belly is for playing "hide-and-seek"

Lots of tiny light organs are scattered all over the Firefly squid's belly. This trick helps them hide from enemies hunting from below! During the day in the deep sea, they make their bellies glow with the exact same brightness and same color as the sunlight coming from above. This lets them blend into the bright ocean light and hide their shadow when looked at from below.

A huge trip day and night! A big daily adventure

When the sun is out during the day, they stay in the deep sea where only a little light reaches, about 200 to 600 meters deep, so enemies cannot find them easily. When night comes, they travel up to shallow waters near the surface (around 100 meters deep) to eat plankton! Plus, in the spring spawning season, a huge group of Firefly squid gathers right near the waves at night.
