About Western Hercules beetle

Beautiful Silver-White Body! Name Origin and English Names

The Western Hercules beetle is a super popular insect! It is very rare among beetles because its whole body is a pretty white or light cream color. People say the name "Grant" comes from General Grant, a famous old American general and president. It may also come from Fort Grant in America, which was named after him!

In English, it is called "Grant’s rhinoceros beetle." Because it is a relative of the Hercules beetle, the biggest beetle in the world, it is also called "Western Hercules beetle."

Where Does It Live? Places You Can See It

The Western Hercules beetle does not live in Japan. It lives in the mountains of the United States, like in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. They love high, dry mountains in the American West and forests with lots of ash trees! In Japan, you can meet them at pet shops that sell bugs from other countries.

When Can You See It? Active Season

In wild American forests, many of them show up at the end of summer, from August to September. They are night bugs. At night, they often fly toward streetlights and bright signs. People over there sometimes use lights to catch them!

What Does It Eat to Grow Big?

  • Grown-up beetles (Adults): They use their proud horns to scrape ash trees in the forest. Then they lick up the sweet tree sap that comes out! When you keep them in a bug cage, they love store-bought insect jelly.

  • Baby time (Larvae): When they are larvae under the dirt, they eat rich black soil made from rotten wood and leaves. This helps them grow big! They stay larvae for about one year.

How Long Does It Live? Lifespan

From the time it hatches from an egg, the whole life of a Western Hercules beetle is about one and a half to two years. But after it turns into a grown-up and crawls out of the ground, it lives for about two to four months. They tend to live a little longer than Japanese rhinoceros beetles!

Color Changes with Wetness!? Amazing Magic

The most amazing secret of the Western Hercules beetle is that its body changes color!

  • When dry: When its body is nice and dry, it is the shiny, pretty white color that everyone knows.

  • When wet: When it rains or gets foggy, its whole body drinks in the water. Then it turns jet black or dark brown! This is just like the Hercules beetle. Tiny structures on its wings take in water, and light reflects differently, making it look black. If you spray water on it in a cage, it turns black right away!

The Secret of the Black Dots on Its Back

If you look closely at the white back of a Western Hercules beetle, you will see little black dots. Just like human fingerprints, every single beetle has a different pattern and number of dots! Some have lots of dots, while others have almost none and look pure white. When you do your coloring page, you can draw your very own dots! That is one fun thing about this bug.

How to Color Western Hercules beetle

Base Coloring for Beautiful Whites and Creams

The Western Hercules beetle is a white beetle. But if you add a little color instead of leaving it plain white, it will look super real!

  • Base Colors: First, gently color the whole body with a very soft light yellow, cream, or light gray.

  • Shadows for a 3D Look: Add light blue or lavender shadows along the sides of the belly and near the center line of the wings. This makes the shiny silver-white body look round and cool!

Show How the Color Changes with Water

It is fun to show the cool secret of the Western Hercules beetle on your coloring page!

  • Color Half in Black: Imagine the beetle got wet in the rain and its colors changed. Color half of the body in dark brown or black using soft blending. You can show your friends and say, "Look! It turned dark from the water!"

Back Spots and Shiny Wings

Here is a trick to make the wing shell look hard and smooth.

  • Color the Spots Clearly: Use a sharp black or dark brown colored pencil to fill in the round spots on its back neatly.

  • Leave Highlights for Shine: Leave a thin white line on the highest part of the back. Color the area around it a little darker. This makes the wings look super shiny in the sunlight!

Big Horns and Rough Tree Bark

Coloring the cool horns and the rough tree differently will make your picture look amazing!

  • How to Color the Long Horns: Add extra black near the tips of the long horns. Use quick, light strokes with light brown under the top horn. This shows the tiny, fine hairs on the horn!

  • Rough Tree Trunk: Move your pencil up and down with strong strokes using brown and dark brown on the tree bark. Since the Western Hercules beetle is light, coloring the tree in dark brown will make your hero beetle stand out!
