About Number "1"

Number "1" is "ichi"

The number on this coloring page is "1". You read it as "ichi".
Color the big Number "1" on the top right, trace the light Number "1" below it, and count the elephant on the left.
On just one sheet of paper, this coloring page lets you do three things: color, trace, and count.
If you say "ichi" out loud while you work, you can learn the number and how to read it at the same time!

1 Elephant

On the left side, there is 1 elephant.
Point with your finger and try counting out loud: "1, 2, 3..."
If the last number you count is "1", you are super right!
It is also fun to color each elephant one by one after you finish counting.

What kind of animal is an elephant?

Elephants are the biggest animals that live on land. Grown-up elephants weigh as much as many cars put together!
An elephant's coolest feature is its long trunk. They suck up water with their trunk to drink, and grab grass to eat. They also flap their big ears to cool off.

Let's count with "tou"

Big animals like elephants are counted as "1-tou, 2-tou" using the word "tou". "Tou" is written with the kanji for "head". Cows and horses are counted the same way.
It is fun how counting words change in Japanese depending on the object!
Try thinking with your family about how to count different things around you.

Let's look for Number "1" around us

There is only 1 sun and 1 moon in the sky. You also have 1 mouth and 1 nose on your face.
Look around your house or when you go outside to see if any Number "1" things are hiding!
When you find one, point at it and say "1!"
It is also fun to look for things with the Number "1" on them, like the 1st day on a calendar or 1 o'clock on a clock.

Let's look closely at the shape of Number "1"

Number "1" looks like 1 straight stick standing up. At the top, it has a little corner that looks like a flag.
If you remember shapes by comparing them to something else, it is easier to remember numbers.
What does it look like to you? Give it a thought!

Let's collect all of them from 0 to 10

Our number coloring pages come in the same style all the way from "0" to "10".
When you color them one by one, you will learn how numbers look, how to read them, and how much they mean!
For tracing, it is great to try tracing with your finger together with your family at first.

How to Color Number "1"

Color the big "1" in your favorite color

The big "1" at the top right is the star of this coloring page.
Try coloring it with your favorite color. Bright colors like red, orange, or yellow will really make it pop!
The trick is to color slowly and carefully so you stay inside the black lines.

Trace over the light "1"s

In the boxes below, there are 10 light gray "1"s lined up.
Use a pencil or crayon to trace them slowly from top to bottom.
Go slow at first. As you get used to it, you will be able to write faster little by little.
After you trace them, it is a great idea to try writing Number "1" by yourself in the empty space next to them!

How to color the elephant

Elephants look real when you color them gray, but light blue or pink elephants are cute, too! If you color just the inside of the ears a light pink, it gives the elephant a gentle face.

How to write Number "1"

Start writing Number "1" from the little corner on the top left, and go straight down. It is the easiest number to write because you can do it in one stroke.
When you trace it, try to remember this order.
When you follow the stroke order, your number will look neat and pretty.

Count out loud as you color

When you color the picture on the left, say "1, 2..." out loud every time you color one item.
