About Bell cricket

What kind of bug is it?

The Bell cricket is a bug that sings with a very beautiful "Reen, reen" voice when autumn comes. It looks a little bit like a cricket. Since long ago in Japan, everyone has loved this bug for bringing us the sounds of autumn.

The difference between males and females

Male and female Bell crickets look a little different.

  • Males can sing "Reen, reen!" They have special wings for singing that are flat and wide.
  • Females cannot sing. Instead, they have a long, thin tube at the end of their bottom called an egg-laying tube that helps them lay eggs.

Why do they sing?

Only male Bell crickets sing. They sing to call females and to tell other males about their spot. They make their singing sound by rubbing their wings together. People say their beautiful voice sounds very attractive to females!

Where do they live?

Bell crickets live in the mountains and grassy fields of Japan. During the day, they hide under bushes of grass and leaves. When night comes, they come out and start singing. These days, it is rare to see wild Bell crickets, but they are sold in stores, so you can enjoy their songs inside your home!

What do Bell crickets eat?

Bell crickets eat plant leaves, vegetables, and fruit. When you keep them at home, they will happily eat things like cucumbers and eggplants!

When is the best season?

Bell crickets start singing from the end of summer through autumn. They sing with their most beautiful voice at night from September to October when the temperature cools down. When you hear the Bell cricket's song, it makes you feel like "Ah, autumn is almost here!"

How to Color Bell cricket

How to Choose Colors: Look Closely at a Real Bell cricket!

The key to coloring this Bell cricket coloring page is making its body look shiny and black.

  • Body Color: A Bell cricket has a shiny black body. Instead of using just black, try adding a little gray or light blue where the light hits it. That will make it look extra shiny!
  • Legs and Antennae: Color the legs and the long, thin antennae carefully with black or dark brown.

How to Make It Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Light"!

Here are some fun ideas to make your Bell cricket's round body look 3D.

  • Shadowy Places: Press a little harder with your dark black crayon under the body and where the legs start. This will make it look nice and round!
  • Shiny Places: Leave the back and the round head a little lighter where the light shines on them. That will make them look glossy!
