About Cricket

What kind of bug is it?

Cricket is a bug you see in many places. In autumn, it sings with a pretty voice that sounds like "koro-koro" or "ree-ree". It looks a little bit like a grasshopper. For a long time in Japan, people have loved Cricket as the bug that brings the sounds of autumn.

Types of Cricket

There are many different types of Cricket.

  • Oriental Garden Cricket: This is the most famous Cricket. It has a big body that is shiny and black. It sings with a soft "koro-koro" voice.
  • Teleogryllus emma Cricket: It is a little smaller than the Oriental Garden Cricket, and it has a brown body. It got its Japanese name because its song sounds like "tsuzuresase".

Why does it sing?

Only boy Crickets sing. They sing to call girls, or to tell other boys where they are. Cricket rubs its wings together to make the sound.

Where does it live?

Cricket lives in fields, grassy places, and gardens in Japan. In the daytime, it hides under grass and leaves. At night, it comes out to look for food.

What does Cricket eat?

Cricket eats plant leaves, vegetables, and fruit. It eats all kinds of things, so sometimes it eats tiny insects too.

How to Color Cricket

How to Choose Colors: Take a Close Look at a Real Cricket!

The key to your Cricket coloring page is how you color its black and brown body.

  • Body Color: A Cricket has a shiny black or brown body. Instead of using just one color, try adding a little gray or light blue where the light hits it. This will make it look nice and shiny!
  • Legs and Antennae: Try to carefully color the legs and the long, thin antennae with dark brown or black.

How to Make It Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Light"!

Here are some cool tricks to make the Cricket's round body look 3D.

  • Places in the Shadow: Layer a darker color on the underside of its body and where the legs connect. This will make it look round and real!
  • Places in the Light: Make the color a little lighter on its back and the round part of its head. This makes it look like light is shining on your Cricket!
