About Giant stag beetle

What kind of bug is it?

The Giant stag beetle is a super popular type of stag beetle. It has a shiny, pitch-black body and big, strong jaws that look so cool! A long time ago, it was called a phantom stag beetle because it was so hard to find.

Size and jaw shape

The Giant stag beetle is about 5 to 8 centimeters long. The males have thick jaws that look just like black tree branches. They are very strong. When they fight other stag beetles, they pinch them with those powerful jaws and toss them away!

Where do they live?

The Giant stag beetle lives in the mountains and forests of Japan. You can often find them near acorn trees like sawtooth oaks and konara oaks. During the day, they hide inside tree hollows or holes in the ground. They come out at night to look for food.

There are fewer of them now than in the past, so they can be hard to find. But if you check a sawtooth oak tree at night, you might get lucky and see one!

Why are they so popular?

The Giant stag beetle is very popular because of its cool look and because it used to be so hard to find. You can also keep them at home, and they live for a long time, so they make great pets too!
