Fast hunter! Velociraptor!

Velociraptor was a super fast and very smart meat-eating dinosaur! It was a cool dinosaur that worked together in groups to chase down prey. You often see it in movies, too!

When did it live?

Velociraptor lived near the end of the "Cretaceous period," about 75 million to 71 million years ago. This was very close to the time when Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops lived, too.

What kind of dinosaur was it?

Velociraptor is a dinosaur species named "Velociraptor mongoliensis." In English, it is written as "Velociraptor mongoliensis." "Velociraptor" means "swift robber," and mongoliensis means "from Mongolia." Just like its name says, it was found in Mongolia and was super fast!

It was small, but strong!

Velociraptor was small compared to big dinosaurs.

• Its length was about as long as a human adult (about 1.5 to 2 meters)!
• Its height was about as tall as an elementary school desk (about 0.5 meters), which is smaller than you might think.
• Its weight was thought to be about as heavy as a human child (about 15 to 20 kilograms).

Even though it was small, it worked together in groups to catch big prey!

Its weapon was sharp sickle claws!

Velociraptor had sharp claws on its back feet that looked just like big hooks. It lifted these claws up so they didn't touch the ground when walking. Scientists think it used them to stab and slash when catching prey.

It was smart and worked together!

Velociraptor is thought to be very smart for a dinosaur. People say it might have worked together in packs to corner prey and hunt using teamwork!

It had feathers!

Recent studies show that Velociraptor had feathers like a bird on its body! It has scales in movies, but it really had fluffy feathers. It might have used them to stay warm or to show off to others.

What did it eat?

Velociraptor was a meat-eating dinosaur. It caught and ate small dinosaurs, mammals, and lizards. It never let its prey get away with its sharp claws and teeth.

A long time ago, Velociraptor lived mainly around Mongolia and China in Asia. People think it lived in dry places like deserts.

How long did it live?

We do not know the exact lifespan of Velociraptor, but people think it lived for about 10 to 15 years.

How to Choose Colors: Pick Colors for a Speedy Hunter!

• Main Body Colors: Velociraptor was a fast hunter, so colors that help it hide in its surroundings are great.
  • Brown (earth colors, sand colors, dark brown): Makes it look like it is hiding in the desert or rocks.
  • Green (dull green, dark green): Makes it look like it is hiding in the grass or woods.
  • Gray (a little bluish gray, dark gray): Great colors for hunting at night.
  • If you mix a few of these colors together, it will look even more real. Adding stripes or spots looks super cool, too!
• Belly Colors: If you make the belly a little lighter color than the body (like light brown or cream color), it will look nice and 3D.

• This Velociraptor has a lot of lines on its body. You can use these lines as clues to add shadows!
• Places with Shadows
  • Dented muscle parts (inside the thighs, under the arms)
  • Under the jaw and neck wrinkles
  • Base of the tail and the bottom of the body (close to the ground)
  • Deep parts of the wrinkles
  • If you use a color that is a little darker than your main color in these spots, it will look bumpy and 3D!
• Places Where Light Hits
  • For places where muscles pop out or parts like the back where light hits easily, leave them a little brighter or use a lighter color to make it look even more 3D.

Tips for Pencils, Crayons, and Paints!

• Colored Pencils: Press hard for dark colors and light for pale colors. This makes light and shadow easy! Pressing over the same spot makes the color look deeper.
• Crayons: Color a little thick to give it a bumpy feel. Rub with your finger to blend the colors!
