Pteranodon is not a dinosaur, but it is a creature called a pterosaur that flew in the sky when dinosaurs were around. It spread its big wings and glided through the sky!

Pteranodon lived in an era called the "Cretaceous period," about 86 million to 84 million years ago. This was near the end of the era when many dinosaurs lived.

What Type Was It?

Pteranodon is a type of pterosaur called "Pteranodon longiceps." In English, it is written as "Pteranodon longiceps." The name "Pteranodon" means "wing without teeth," and "longiceps" means "long head." Just like its name, it had no teeth and a long crest on the back of its head!

What Did It Eat?

Pteranodon was a meat-eating pterosaur that mainly ate fish. It looked down at the water from the sky, and when it found a fish, it caught it quickly with its sharp beak.

Where Did Pteranodon Live?

A long, long time ago, Pteranodon mainly lived in the western part of North America, especially around where Kansas in the United States is today. That area was a vast sea long ago.

How Long Did It Live?

We do not know Pteranodon's exact lifespan, but because it was a large pterosaur, people think it may have lived for about 10 to 20 years.

How to Pick Colors: Choose Great Colors for Pteranodon Flying in the Sky!

• Main Body Colors: Pteranodon flies in the sky, so colors like the sky, clouds, or rocks work really well.
  • Gray (light gray or blue-gray): This makes it look like a bird soaring in the sky.
  • Brown (light brown or sandy brown): This makes it look like it is resting on rocky cliffs.
  • White or Cream: Making the tummy and under the wings bright makes it stand out in the sky!

  • If you color these spots a little darker than your main color, it will pop and look 3D!

• Pteranodon's wings were made of thin skin, just like a bat!
• When you color the wings, try to use light colors to make them look see-through. This makes it look much more real!
• If you use colored pencils, press softly and color over the spot a few times. This makes it look nice and thin!
