Nothosaurus was a sea reptile that lived during the "Triassic period," about 245 million to 230 million years ago! Its neck was not as long as a plesiosaur's yet. But it is thought to be a friend of sea reptiles that began moving its home from land into the shallow sea.

The English name for Nothosaurus is Nothosaurus. This name combines the Greek words "nothos" (false or uncertain) and "sauros" (lizard). It means "false lizard" or "doubtful lizard." People say this is because it was hard to classify when it was first found!

Fossils of Nothosaurus have been found across large areas of Europe.

• They are found especially in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, and China.
