About Oden

A Hero for Cold Winters! Warm Oden to Warm Your Heart and Body

Oden is a winter dish that has been loved in Japan for a long time. Different ingredients like daikon radish, eggs, and konjac are simmered gently for a long time in a soup called "dashi," which is made from bonito flakes and kelp. Eating warm Oden packed with tasty soup will warm up your chilly body. People eat it at home, but it is also sold at convenience stores and food stalls. Everyone loves it!

Popular Friends in Oden

Oden has ingredients with many shapes and tastes. Do you have a favorite one?

  • Daikon Radish: The king of Oden! The white radish absorbs lots of delicious soup and turns a nice brownish color.
  • Egg: The yolk is soft and warm. It tastes amazing when you mix it with the soup!
  • Konjac: It has a fun, wiggly texture! There are dark ones and white noodles called "shirataki."
  • Chikuwa: This is made from ground fish meat. It has a hole in the middle and dark grill marks on top.
  • Mochi Kinchaku: This is a fried tofu pouch with a rice cake inside. When you bite into it, gooey rice cake pops out like a treasure chest!
  • Hanpen: It is white and fluffy. It is so soft that it melts in your mouth!

Different Tastes in Different Places?

Oden actually tastes a little different depending on the area in Japan. In Eastern Japan like Tokyo, people like a dark soup. In Western Japan like Osaka, people prefer a light soup. In Aichi, Oden is simmered with miso paste. In Shizuoka, Oden is simmered in a deep black soup and topped with fish powder!

How to Color Oden

How to Choose Yummy Colors

When you color your Oden coloring page, the trick is to make it look tasty and full of flavor!

  • Daikon Radish: Don't just use plain white. Try layering light brown and cream! If you color the edges a little darker, it looks like it soaked up plenty of broth.
  • Konjac: Color it gray first, then add tiny black dots to make it look just like the real thing! It is often cut into triangles.
  • Chikuwa: Color the whole thing light brown or cream, and use dark brown for the toasted part in the middle.
  • Mochi Pouch: Color it golden brown (bright brown) just like a fried tofu pouch. Make the tied top a bit darker to give it a 3D look!
  • Soup: For the broth with all the ingredients inside, use a soft stroke of see-through light brown or yellow.

Make It Look Piping Hot!

Oden tastes best when it is hot! Draw steam rising up, or color the background in warm orange and red. That will make it feel like you are eating it on a chilly day. Imagine a big hot pot while you color!

Fun Facts About Oden

The Name Came from a "Dance"!

The word "Oden" actually comes from a dish called "Dengaku." Long ago, there was a dance called "Dengaku-mai," where people danced on single-leg stilts to pray for good crops. The tofu on a skewer looked just like that dance, so it was called "Dengaku." Later, the word got shorter, and people added a polite "O" to the front to make "Oden."

The Secret of the "Cross" on the Daikon Radish

If you look closely at the daikon radish in Oden, you might see a cross cut into the middle. This is called a "hidden cut." It helps the yummy soup soak all the way to the inside! This little extra step makes the daikon radish taste so much better.

Why Convenience Store Oden Tastes So Good

At convenience stores, Oden is often cooked slowly at a low heat for much longer than at home. That is why it does not fall apart and has lots of flavor inside! Plus, many stores change the soup flavor to match the region you are in.
