About Snowboarding

An exciting sport where you slide down snowy mountains in your own free style! Snowboarding is a sport where you strap both feet onto one big board and slide down a snowy mountain sideways. Unlike skiing, you do not use poles. You balance with your whole body to glide along! You can enjoy cool, free movements, just like surfing or skateboarding on top of the snow.

History and Name of Snowboarding

  • English Name: Snowboarding

  • History: It started in America in the 1960s. People made a toy called a "Snurfer" by tying two skis side by side. After that, people kept making it better. Now, Snowboarding has spread around the world as a cool and fun sport!

Styles and Ways to Enjoy Snowboarding

There are a few different styles of Snowboarding, depending on how you slide!

  • Freeriding: In this style, you ride freely not just on smooth slopes, but also down soft, fluffy fresh snow (powder snow).

  • Freestyle: In this acrobatic style, you jump high off ramps, slide along rails, or spin around on the snow.

  • Ground Tricks (Guratori): These are cool tricks where you bounce or spin your board on flat snow. Everyone loves them, from beginners to Hard riders!

Gear You Need and Safety Prep

Picking the right gear and getting ready is super important so you can enjoy Snowboarding safely!

  1. Board, Bindings, and Boots: Pick ones that fit your size and skill level. Setting up your bindings to connect your feet to the board is very important, too.

  2. Snow Clothes: You will sit on the snow a lot. Choose waterproof clothes so your bottom does not get wet!

  3. Protective Gear: Beginners fall down a lot. It is a good idea to wear pads to protect your bottom and knees, and a helmet to guard your head.

  4. Leash Cord: This safety strap stops your board from sliding away on its own if you fall. It is an important rule so you do not hit people around you.

How to Color Snowboarding

Here are some tips to show cool Snowboarding moves and the snowy mountain air!

Show exciting jumps and turns

  • Snow spray: Keep the flying snow around the board pure white. Add shadows along the edges with light blue or light gray. This makes your picture look fast and cool!

  • Bottom of the board: If the rider is jumping, color the bottom of the board with bright colors like neon pink or green. Snowboarding boards often have fun designs on the bottom!

Color your favorite cool clothes

  • Snowboarders wear cool baggy clothes and colorful hats. Use your favorite colors to make your own awesome rider!

  • Color the goggles with silver (gray) or orange. You can add shiny light reflections to make it look real!

Draw the big snowy mountain

  • Color sunny spots on the mountain white. Use light purple or blue for shadows. This shows the fresh, cold mountain air!

  • Leave the snow on the tree branches white so it pops out!

Fun Facts About Snowboarding

It All Started with a Homemade Toy from Dad

Snowboarding actually has a pretty short history. It is said to have started when an American dad put two skis together to make a "snow surfboard" so his kids could play even on snowy days. At first, this fun plaything was called a "Snurfer."

"Regular" and "Goofy"

When you stand on the board, a cool feature is that you stand sideways to the direction you are going. Riding with your left foot forward is called "Regular," and riding with your right foot forward is called "Goofy." You can choose whichever feels easier or matches your dominant foot.

The Boots are Soft and Easy to Walk In

Ski boots are super hard and stiff because they are made of plastic. But Snowboarding boots are often made of a slightly softer material. So, even when you take off your board and walk in the snow, you can walk normally without feeling like a robot.

It Became an Olympic Sport for the First Time in Japan!

It is a super popular sport today, but it actually became an official Olympic sport starting with the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Right from the games held in Japan, it joined the ranks of major sports that people all over the world watch!
