Hiragana "u" is a character born from writing kanji in a quick, relaxed way.
The Kanji that Hiragana "u" comes from is "Hiragana "u"" Hiragana "u"".
It is thought that the dot on top of "宇" became the first stroke of Hiragana "u", and the simplified bottom part became the second stroke.
The Katakana for "u" comes from the top part of the same Kanji "宇", too.

Tips for writing Hiragana "u"

Hiragana "u" is2 strokesis a character you write with.
For the 1st stroke, draw a short slanted line at the top.
For the second stroke, write from left to right with a slight upward slope, then make a big curve as you bring it down.
For the last stroke, brush gently toward the bottom left to make a nice, soft Hiragana "u".
