Hiragana "Me" comes from the kanji "女"

Hiragana "Me" was created by people a long time agoSimplified from KanjiIt is a character made from the original Kanji!
The kanji that became the origin of Hiragana "Me" is the kanji read as "onna", "Woman" it is!
It is said that "め" took its current shape as people wrote the kanji "女" in a smooth, rounded way with a brush.
The kanji for woman can also be read as "me," so that same sound stayed with Hiragana "Me".

Writing tips

"Me" is2 strokesThis is a letter you write with.
The first stroke is a short diagonal line that goes from the top left down to the bottom right!
For the second stroke, come down at an angle from the top, make a big round curve, and finish pointing to the left without making a loop.
There is a very similar character called "Nu" is there, too!
"Hiragana "Me"" doesn't have a loop at the end, but "ぬ" does, so be careful not to mix them up!

Color the big Hiragana "Me" in two colors

Color the big outlined Hiragana "Me" with your favorite colors.
If you use different colors for the first stroke and the second stroke, it is easy to see that this character has two strokes.
If you use a dark color at the very end where you finish without making a loop, you can clearly see how it is different from "Nu".

Color the glasses frames any color you like

Try coloring the frames around the glasses with your favorite colors, like black, brown, red, or blue.
If you color the lenses quickly with light sky blue or leave them white, they will look clear!
Leaving diagonal white light lines on the lenses makes them look just like glass.
If you color the sides the same color as the frames, it will all match nicely.

For the second page, think about the real colors of the objects

Try coloring the killifish with light yellowish-brown or an orangey color.
For the fried egg, make the yolk yellow and leave the egg white as white, and it will look delicious!
For the flower with the pistil, make the petals pink or red, and color the middle yellow.

Tracing practice

In the boxes at the bottom right, there are 8 light gray Hiragana "Me".
Hold your pencil correctly and trace them slowly so you do not go outside the gray lines.
The vertical and horizontal dotted lines in the boxes show you the center of the character. Use the dotted lines as a guide to check where to start writing and where to stop.
After you write one, compare it with the big sample character.
It is okay if you do not write all 8 at once. Take your time and write carefully at your own pace, like doing 2 each day.

Where Were Glasses Invented?

Glasses were first used in Italy about 700 years ago.
In Japan, it is said that they started when Francis Xavier, a missionary from another country, gave a pair to a Japanese lord long ago.
Old glasses were held by hand or pinched on the nose.

The Town of Glasses

Sabae City in Fukui Prefecture is a town famous for making eyeglass frames.
Most of the eyeglass frames made in Japan come from this town.
There is even a big monument shaped like glasses!

Glasses Day

October 1st is "Glasses Day."
If you write 1001, the two 0s in the middle look like two lenses. The 1s on the ends look like the arms. That is why this day was picked.
Try writing the numbers on paper to see if they look like glasses to you!

Take Good Care of Your Glasses

Glasses lenses get scratched easily.
When you put them down, fold the arms and do not put the lenses facing down.
If they get dirty, wipe them gently with a glasses cloth.
