Where the Name Comes From

The Japanese name for Dandelion is "Tanpopo." Doesn't that sound cute? There are a few stories about how it got its name. The most famous story is that it comes from a small Japanese drum called a "Tsuzumi." If you cut a Dandelion stem short and slit both ends, it curls up in water and looks just like a drum! Long ago, people made drum sounds like "tan-pon-pon." So, people started calling the flower "Tanpopo." A long time ago, people also called it "Drum Grass."

Japanese Dandelion vs. Western Dandelion

You can see Dandelion all around you. But did you know there are two main types? There are "Native Dandelion (Japanese Dandelion)" that has grown in Japan for a long time, and "Foreign Dandelion (Western Dandelion)" that came from other countries.

• Japanese Dandelion: It blooms only for a short time in spring. The tiny green leaves right under the flower bloom stay closed tightly.

• Western Dandelion: It grows super fast and strong! Sometimes it blooms all year round. The biggest hint is that the green leaves under the flower "curl backward."

When you find a Dandelion on the street, look at the back of the flower. See which type it is!

Super Strength and Super Long Roots

Dandelion is super tough. It can even pop out from cracks in the street! The secret to its strength is its "main root" deep underground. The flower on top looks small, but the root can grow 50 cm to 1 meter deep! It saves water and food in this long root. That is why Dandelion can bloom again, even if you step on it or pull it up!

Flower Meanings of Dandelion

Dandelion has many sweet flower meanings based on how it looks and grows.

• "Love Oracle": People used to play fortune-telling games by blowing its fluff.

• "True Love": It reaches straight up toward the warm sun.

• "Happiness": Its bright yellow color tells us that spring is here.

• "Goodbye": Its fluffy seeds fly far away on the wind.

When Dandelion Blooms in Different Areas

Dandelion is a famous spring flower. But Japan is long from north to south, so it blooms at different times depending on where you live.

• Kyushu, Shikoku, Kansai: Starts blooming from late February to late March.

• Kanto, Tokai, Chubu: Best time to see them is from mid-March to mid-April.

• Tohoku, Hokkaido: Blooms all at once from late April to mid-May when snow melts.

Western Dandelion can bloom even in winter if it is warm enough. But it looks best and makes the fields pretty from March to May during the peak of spring!

Make the yellow petals pop out

A Dandelion flower has layers and layers of thin petals. If you color it with just one shade of yellow, it will look flat.

• First, color the whole flower lightly with bright yellow.

• Next, add little dots of darker orange or golden yellow in the center and at the base of the petals.

• Finally, add a tiny bit of white to the tips of the petals. It will make them look shiny, like light is hitting them!

Coloring the unique leaves

Dandelion leaves are special because they grow in a jagged star shape close to the ground.

• Color the whole leaf with yellow-green. Then, add dark green only where shadows fall to show how the leaves overlap.

• Try mixing a tiny bit of reddish-brown or purple into the leaf veins near the bottom. This gives it a strong, real look like a wild Dandelion!

How to draw delicate seed puffs

Coloring fluffy seed puffs can be a little tricky, but try these tips!

• If your paper is white, leave the fluffy parts uncolored. Instead, color the center dots (the brown core) firmly.

• Use a very light sky blue or gray to draw soft, round shadows around the fluff. This makes the white color stand out!

• For seeds floating in the air, blur the edges a little bit instead of drawing neat lines. It will look like they are riding the wind!

Stem reddish tones and texture

A Dandelion stem is not just plain green!

• The closer you get to the bottom, the more pink or reddish-purple it gets.

• After you color the stem, use an eraser to gently rub light, thin vertical lines. This makes it look soft and fuzzy, just like a real stem!

Lots of Small Flowers Together

A Dandelion flower looks like just one flower, but if you look really closely, it is actually made of many "small flowers" gathered together. Each little petal is actually its own complete flower!

Opening in the Morning and Closing in the Evening

Dandelion loves sunlight! So, it opens its flower in the morning, and when it gets dark in the evening or when it rains, it "closes its flower". It is almost like it wakes up and goes to sleep right along with the sun.

It Has Really Long Roots

The part above the ground looks small, but its root under the dirt is "really long"! Deep roots can grow more than one meter into the ground. This makes it a strong plant that can grow happily even if it gets stepped on or if it gets cold.

Fluffy Seeds That Work Like Parachutes

When the yellow flower finishes blooming, it transforms into "fluffy seeds" to carry new seeds far away. These fluffy seeds are shaped just like parachutes to catch the wind, so they can fly far away to new places on the breeze.
