About Bat

The Mammal That Flies in the Sky! Bat!

Bat is the only mammal that can fly in the sky. Bat is nocturnal, and sleeps hanging upside down in caves or tree holes during the day. Some people might think Bat looks a little scary, but Bat is actually very smart and has a lot of cool features!

Where Does Bat Live?

Bat lives in many different places all over the world, except for Antarctica. Bat lives together with many friends in places like caves, tree hollows, and the attics of old buildings. They all hang upside down and sleep during the day, and fly around to look for food at night.

The Secret of Ultrasound

Bat does not have very good eyes. Instead, Bat uses a special sound called "ultrasound" that humans cannot hear.

  1. Make ultrasound: Bat makes ultrasound from its mouth or nose.
  2. Listen to the bouncing sound: The ultrasound hits walls, trees, or bugs and bounces back for Bat to hear.
  3. Find the location: The bouncing sound helps Bat know the exact shape, size, and location of things. This trick is called "echolocation." Thanks to this, Bat can catch food without bumping into things, even in the dark night!

The Secret of the Wings

Unlike a bird's wings, Bat has very long hand and finger bones with a thin skin stretched between them. This skin lets Bat fly around freely in the sky.

Food

There are many kinds of Bat, and each kind eats different foods.

  • Bug-eating Bat: Most types of Bat catch and eat bugs like flies and moths.
  • Fruit-eating Bat: Some Bat living in warm southern places eat fruits and flower nectar.
  • Fish-eating Bat: Some Bat can skillfully catch and eat fish on the water's surface.

Hibernation

Bat living in cold areas hibernates in winter because there is no food. Bat cuddles close together with many friends in places like caves and sleeps until spring comes.

How to Color Bat

How to Pick Colors: Make It Pop Against the Night Sky!

When you color Bat, the main trick is showing off its cool wings and the night sky. Use black and dark brown. Try making some spots look bright like light is hitting them, and make other spots look dark with shadows. That will make your Bat look super real!

  • Body Colors:
    • Black and dark brown are great for the main colors. Bat has fluffy fur! Draw lots of short lines with your pencil tip to make it look soft and fuzzy.
    • To make Bat look sweet, use a little light brown or gray on its tummy and around its face where the light shines.
  • Wing Colors:
    • Color the thin skin of the wings a bit lighter than the body. Light gray or light dark-brown will look just like a real Bat!
