Fluffy and cute! Koalas!

Koalas are very cute animals with round ears, a big nose, and fluffy fur. They are usually up in trees and move very slowly. Like kangaroos and wallabies, they are "marsupials," which means they raise their babies in a pouch on their tummy. They are very unique animals that live in Australia.

Where do they live?

Koalas live in the eastern and southern parts of Australia, where lots of eucalyptus trees grow. They make eucalyptus trees their home and spend their time eating leaves and sleeping. They almost never come down to the ground and live most of their lives up in the trees.

The secret to moving slowly

Koalas spend most of the day sleeping. Believe it or not, they sleep for almost 20 hours a day! The secret to why they sleep so much lies in the eucalyptus leaves they eat. Eucalyptus leaves do not have many nutrients, so it takes a lot of energy to digest them. That is why Koalas move slowly and sleep a lot to save their energy.

Clever paws and feet

Koala paws and feet have sharp claws that help them hold tightly to eucalyptus trees. Their front paws are special because the fingers are split into two and three, making it easy to grip tree trunks. Thanks to this, they can climb well and hold on tightly without falling from the trees.

Food

Koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus leaves contain poisonous stuff, but a Koala's body can break this poison down. They are also picky eaters and choose to eat only the leaves they like best.

Baby Koalas

Baby Koalas are super tiny, measuring only about 2 centimeters when they are born. Right after birth, they crawl into their mother's tummy pouch and spend about six months there. They grow bigger inside the pouch by drinking their mother's milk.

How to Choose Colors: Let's show off that fluffy fur!

When you color your Koala coloring page, the trick is to capture its fluffy fur and soft colors. If you use gray and brown while thinking about light and shadows, your Koala will look super real!

• Body Colors:
  • Color the main part with gray. Mixing in just a little bit of light blue or light brown will give it a nice, rich look.
  • Since the fur is super fluffy, try drawing lots of short lines with the tip of your colored pencil to make it look soft!
  • Leave a little bit of white or light gray on the back and the top of the head where the light hits.
  • For shadows under the tummy and inside the legs, layer some dark gray or dark brown to make the body look round and 3D.
• Ear Colors:
  • Color the inside of the ears white or light pink. If there are fluffy fur lines drawn there, color them neatly to make it look super cute!
• Eye Color:
  • Koala eyes are a cute black color. If you add a tiny white dot to look like reflecting light, the eyes will come alive!
• Nose Color:
  • Color the big, famous nose with a bright black color.
• Background Colors:
  • Koala lives in eucalyptus trees! It is super fun to draw eucalyptus trees around Koala using green and brown.

How to Make It Look 3D: Think about light and shadows!

Koala has a round, chubby body. If you use light and dark shades and shadows well, your coloring page will look much more alive!

• Where to use light and dark shades:
  • Imagine where the light hits the round parts of the body, and leave those spots a little bit lighter.
  • Coloring with short little lines will give the fur a nice fluffy feel.
• Where to put shadows:
  • Places where the body bends and the inside of the legs will be in the shadows.
  • If you color these spots with dark gray or black, the body will pop out and look 3D!

Tips for Pencils, Crayons, and Paints!

• Colored Pencils:
  • It is easy to make light and dark shades by pressing hard for dark colors and pressing softly for light colors.
  • If you put other colors (like black or white) over the gray, you get a beautiful, rich color.
• Crayons:
  • Crayons make it really easy to show fluffy fur. You can even rub the colors with your finger to blur them!
• Paints:
  • Mix a little bit of water into gray paint to make light gray, and try painting the bright spots first. After it dries, layer a darker gray on top to give it depth!
