About Squirrel

Cute Bushy Tail! Squirrel!

Squirrel is an animal known for its cute face and long, bushy tail. Squirrel lives up in the trees and loves to eat nuts and seeds. It is super cute to watch Squirrel move around quickly and sometimes dig holes in the ground to hide food.

Where Does Squirrel Live?

Squirrel lives in forests, woods, and parks all around the world. In Japan, you can find the Ezo Squirrel in Hokkaido, and the Japanese Squirrel in places like Honshu. Squirrel moves fast in the trees and is great at jumping from branch to branch.

The Secret of the Master Storer

There is less food in winter, so Squirrel collects lots of nuts and seeds in autumn. Then, Squirrel buries them in the ground or hides them in tree holes to get ready for winter. But Squirrel cannot remember all the hiding spots and forgets many of them! Thanks to that, the hidden nuts and seeds sprout and grow into new trees, making the forest rich and full of life.

What the Bushy Tail Does

Squirrel's long, bushy tail is not just cute. It does very important jobs!

  1. Keeping balance: When running or jumping in the trees, Squirrel uses the tail to stay balanced.
  2. Staying warm: When it is cold, Squirrel curls up and wraps the tail around its body just like a scarf to stay warm.
  3. Talking to friends: Squirrel moves the tail to warn friends about danger or to show how it feels.

Food and Daily Life

Squirrel eats nuts, seeds, fruit, and insects. Squirrel loves walnuts and acorns best of all. Squirrel can hold food skillfully with its hands, which is so cute to see. Some Squirrels hibernate in winter, but even then, they wake up sometimes to eat the food they hid.
