Fur seal is a sea mammal that lives in cold oceans and on land. It uses its large front flippers to swim smoothly through the sea, and it is great at catching fish and squid to eat. It is part of the sea lion family, so it can stand up and walk well on land too. It is said that the name "Fur seal" comes from words and kanji characters brought from China.

Fur seal Body and Life

Fur seal lives in the cold waters of the North Pacific and on the rocky shores of islands in the Southern Hemisphere. It has a strong body that beats the cold and many features that help it swim well.

• Warm Fur: Fur seal's body is covered in very fine, thick fur. This fur keeps water out and keeps its body warm, even in the cold sea.
• Large Front Flippers: By flapping its large fin-like front flippers, it can swim as fast as if it were flying through the sea.
• Walking on Land: It can bend its back flippers forward, so it can stand and run on all four feet on land.
• Tiny Ears: It has small ear flaps on the sides of its head. This is another big difference from seals.

How to Choose Your Colors

When you color your Fur seal coloring page, try thinking about how its color changes when it gets wet!

• Body color: A dry Fur seal is blackish brown, dark brown, or gray. If you make its belly a little lighter brown, it will look like a real one.
• Wet look: A Fur seal that just came out of the sea looks jet black because it is wet. Use dark black or navy blue to make it look cool.
• Eyes and whiskers: Color its big, round eyes black. Leave the long whiskers on the sides of its face white, or draw them in light gray to make them stand out.

The Fur seal's body is covered in very thick fur. Believe it or not, in just one square centimeter (the size of one side of a die), there are about 50,000 to 100,000 thin hairs growing! By trapping air in this fur, its skin does not get wet directly even in the cold ocean, so its body stays warm.

The differences from seals are "flippers" and "ears"

Fur seals and seals look similar, but there are ways to tell them apart. A Fur seal has cute little ear flaps (seals only have ear holes). Also, a big feature of the Fur seal is that it can use its front and back flippers to lift its body up and walk on four legs on land.
