The "Byu" in "Byuun"
The letters on this coloring page are Hiragana "Byu".
The word is "Byuun". It is a sound word that shows something flying fast through the air.
In the picture on the left, one paper airplane is flying straight ahead, "byuun!"
Behind it, there are wind lines drawn so you can tell it is flying super fast.
How far will it fly?
Two Letters for One Sound
You write Hiragana "Byu" by combining "Bi" with a small "Yu".
Even though you write two letters, you do not say "Bi" and "Yu" separately. You say them together as one sound.
Sounds like this are called youon.
If you write it with a big "Yu" like "Biyu," it becomes two sounds, and it might mean a different word.
The sound changes if there is a small letter or not!
How Hiragana "Byu" Was Made
The letter "Bi" is made by adding two dots (dakuten) to "Hi."
Hiragana letters were born long ago when people started writing kanji in a smooth, flowing way.
"Hi" came from a smooth shape of the kanji "比".
The small "Yu" is just a regular "Yu" written small, and "Yu" comes from a smooth shape of the kanji "由".
Very old kanji turned into the simple, easy shapes we use today over a long time!
Tips for Writing
You write "Hi" in 1 stroke.
Start at the top left, make a big round curve down, go up to the top right, and then pull down a little at the end.
It looks nice if the curve in the middle is balanced on both sides.
For the dots, draw two short dots at the top right after you finish writing the letter.
When writing side to side, put the small "Yu" in the bottom left of the box. When writing top to bottom, put it in the top right.
Be careful not to mix up where the dots and the small "Yu" go!

How to Color Hiragana "Byu"
Color the Big Hiragana "Byu" Like the Sky
Try coloring inside the big Hiragana "Byu" on the top right with your favorite colors.
If you use light blue or blue to match the flying paper airplane, your letter will look fresh and bright.
If you change the colors for "び", "ゅ", and the dots, you can easily see how the letter is made!
Color the Paper Airplane Like Origami Paper
Pretend you made the paper airplane with your favorite origami paper, and color it in red, yellow, or pink.
If you change how dark the colors are on the top and bottom of the wings, the folds will stand out and show the shape clearly.
For example, you can make the top side yellow and the bottom side in the shadow orange.
It is also fun to draw stripes or star patterns on the wings to make your very own paper airplane!
Wind Lines and the Sky
Trace smoothly along the wind lines in the background using light blue or light gray.
If you color the area around it in light blue to make the sky, it will look like the paper airplane is flying through the air.
If you leave some white clouds, the sky will look even nicer!
Trace the Letters with a Pencil
In the boxes on the bottom right, there are 4 sets of light gray Hiragana "Byu" lined up.
Hold your pencil the right way, and trace slowly over the gray lines without going outside.
Use the vertical and horizontal center lines in the boxes as your guide. They will help you learn the size and spot for the letter.
Pay attention to where things go! The dots go on the top right, and the small "ゅ" goes on the bottom left of the box.
Every time you trace one set, say "byu" out loud.
When you trace all 4 sets, try writing Hiragana "Byu" by yourself outside the boxes, too!
Fun Facts About Hiragana "Byu"
Why Paper Airplanes Fly
Paper airplanes can fly in the sky because the air hitting their wings creates a force that lifts them from below.
Real airplanes fly the same way, using the power of the air with their wings too.
Tips for Making Paper Airplanes Fly Well
It is important to fold your paper airplane carefully so the left and right wings have the exact same shape.
Press the folds firmly with your fingers to make them crisp and sharp.
When you throw it, gently push it straight forward instead of using all your strength. That usually helps it fly much better!
Different Shapes of Paper Airplanes
There are many ways to fold paper airplanes, like a spear shape with a sharp tip, or a glider shape with wide wings.
Pointy shapes fly fast and straight, while shapes with wide wings tend to fly slowly and stay in the air longer.
Try making different shapes and compare how they fly!
Rules for Flying Paper Airplanes
Never throw a paper airplane toward someone's face.
The tip is sharp, so it is dangerous if it hits an eye.
Always fly your paper airplane in a wide open space after checking that no one is around you.
