"Nu" came from the Kanji character "奴"

Hiragana "Nu" was created long ago by people whoSimplified from kanjiIt is a letter that people made.
The Kanji that Hiragana "Nu" came from is "Hiragana "Nu"" it is.
It is said that as people wrote "奴" faster and faster, the "女" on the left and the "又" on the right joined together, became rounded, and turned into the Hiragana "Nu" we use today.
The little round loop shows what the original Kanji character used to look like!

Tips for writing Hiragana "Nu"

"Nu" is2 strokesThis is a letter you write with.
Stroke 1 is a diagonal line that goes from the top left down to the bottom right.
For the 2nd stroke, come down from the top, make a big loop, and end with a smallloopwill make Hiragana "Nu".
It looks very much like the letter "Me" is right here!
"Nu" has a loop, and "Me" does not have a loop, so look closely to see the difference.

The word "nuigurumi" (stuffed toy) comes from the words "nutte" (to sew) and "kurumu" (to wrap) because you sew fabric and wrap the stuffing inside!

Color the big Hiragana "Nu" so the loop stands out

Color the big outlined Hiragana "Nu" in any color you like.
If you use a different color just for the loop at the end, it will be easy to see how it is different from "Me".
Using different colors for the 1st stroke and 2nd stroke is a great idea, too!

Color the stuffed bear with gentle colors

Try coloring the bear's body in light brown or ochre.
It will look super cute if you color the inside of its ears and the patches on its feet in light pink or cream.
Color the ribbon on its neck in a color different from its body, like red or blue.
If you trace the stitch lines in a slightly darker color, it will look just like a real stuffed animal!

Think about real colors for the 2nd page

Try coloring the water in the swamp greenish-blue, and the grass around it green or light green.
The cast-off shell is a skin that a cicada shed, so light brown is best.

Tracing practice

There are 8 light gray Hiragana "Nu" characters lined up in the bottom right boxes.
Hold your pencil correctly and trace them slowly. Try not to go outside the gray lines!
The dotted lines inside the boxes show the middle of the character. Use the dotted lines as a guide to see where to start and stop writing.
After you write one, compare it with the big example character.
You do not have to write all 8 at once. Take your time and write carefully at your own pace, like doing 2 each day.

The secret of the teddy bear's name

Stuffed bears are also called teddy bears.
"Teddy" was the nickname of US President Theodore Roosevelt.
The story goes that President Roosevelt went bear hunting and spared a weak, captured bear. That is why stuffed bears came to be named "Teddy's bear."

The stuffed animal hospital

There is a stuffed animal hospital that carefully fixes stuffed animals when they get old or torn.
They put in new stuffing and sew up loose threads.
They make sure you can stay with your favorite stuffed animal for a long time.

Patches are a sign of care
