About Neuschwanstein Castle

A White Castle Standing Above the Forest

Neuschwanstein Castle is a white castle. It stands deep in the mountains of Bavaria, in southern Germany.
Many pointed towers and steep triangular roofs line up on top of the rugged rocky mountain.
In German, its name means "New Swan Stone."
The first coloring page shows the castle standing above an autumn forest.

The King Who Made His Dreams Come True

King Ludwig II of Bavaria built this castle.
Work began in 1869, but the king died in 1886, so the castle was left unfinished.
It was not built for fighting. It was built to show the world of ancient knights that the king admired so much.

The Story World of the Musician Wagner

Ludwig II loved operas by the musician Wagner.
He tried to bring the world of stories to life through the castle's shape and wall paintings, like the swan knight story "Lohengrin."
Inside the castle, you can find many swan decorations and pictures of story scenes.

The Famous View from Photos

The second page shows the castle from the most famous view that you often see in photos.
The Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) over the nearby valley is known as the best place to see the castle.
You can see the tall left tower, the main building with many windows, the square watchtower on the right, and the gatehouse in front.
Try counting how many rows of windows there are!

A World Heritage Site in 2025

Neuschwanstein Castle was just named a World Heritage Site in 2025.
It was added together with two other castles built by Ludwig II (Linderhof Palace and Herrenchiemsee Palace) as the "Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria."
It is a much newer World Heritage Site compared to the Colosseum or the Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza.

Surrounded by Mountains and Lakes

The castle is surrounded by the Alps, forests, and lakes.
The flat land and lake behind the castle on the second page show the view you can see from the top of the castle.
The forest changes color in autumn and is covered in snow in winter. You can enjoy different views in every season!

How to Color Neuschwanstein Castle

The Walls Are White and Cream

The walls of Neuschwanstein Castle are made of whitish stone.
If you leave the white parts as they are and color only the shaded spots in light cream or light gray, your Neuschwanstein Castle will look bright!

The Roof Is Bluish Gray

The real roof is bluish gray and dark gray.
Some tips of the pointed towers are even a greenish color.
Try coloring the gate building in the front with a brick color.

Color the Forest for the Season

The first coloring page is based on a photo of an autumn forest.
If you color the trees in orange, yellow, and green, you will get a lovely fall forest!
On the second coloring page, color the pointy trees dark green. If you want to make a snowy winter scene, leaving the tips of the trees white is a great idea, too!

The Faraway Lakes and Sky

Behind Neuschwanstein Castle, color the faraway lakes light blue and the flat fields light green.
If you make the sky light blue and leave the clouds white, the white Neuschwanstein Castle will really stand out!

Make the Windows Sharp with Dark Colors

The main building has many windows lined up in rows.
If you color the window glass in dark blue or gray and leave the frames white, they will stand out nicely against the white walls.
Try adding color little by little to the small roof windows and the tips of the pointed towers, too.
Coloring the balcony decorations in cream gives them a soft feel.
Mix gray and brown on the rocky cliff to make it look rough and bumpy!
