About Sagrada Família

A Huge Church in Barcelona

Sagrada Família is a huge church in Barcelona, Spain.
Its name means "Holy Family."
Construction started in 1882, and people are still building it today, over 140 years later!
In 2005, it was chosen as a World Heritage site as part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí."

Gaudí Devoted His Life to It

The architect who designed this church was Antoni Gaudí.
Gaudí took over the project in 1883, the year after work began. He worked on it until he passed away in 1926.
Gaudí used many shapes from nature in the building, like trees, bones, and seashells!

Towers That Look Like Corn

The most special feature is its tall, thin towers stretching into the sky.
They look like corn on the cob, lined with lots of tiny windows on the outside.
When finished, there will be 18 towers in total!
Twelve towers represent the 12 Apostles (Jesus's followers), four represent the writers of the Gospels, one represents Mary, and the tallest one represents Jesus.

The Tallest Church in the World

The center Jesus Tower stands 172.5 meters tall!
In February 2026, a big cross was finished on top, making it the tallest church in the world.
Try to find the tallest tower with the cross on top in the first coloring page!

Three Main Entrances

Sagrada Família has three grand entrances that show the life of Jesus. These entrances are called "facades."
There is the "Nativity Facade" showing his birth, the "Passion Facade" showing his final days, and the "Glory Facade."
The second coloring page shows the Passion Facade, with its thick, bone-like pillars slanting in a row.

Lots of Gaudí's Works in Barcelona

Barcelona has many other buildings created by Gaudí!
Famous ones include Park Güell with its mosaic benches, and Casa Milà with its wavy shape.
As you walk through the city, you will see many of Gaudí's wonderful buildings!

How to Color Sagrada Família

The stones are beige and light brown

The stones of the Sagrada Família are beige and light brown.
If you make the top of the towers a little lighter and the bottom a little darker, they will look very tall!
Color the older parts dark brown and the newer parts whitish. That will make it look just like a church that is still being built!

The tops of the towers are colorful

On the real church, there are red, gold, and white decorations on top of the towers.
Try coloring the tops of the four towers on the second page in any color you like!
The cross on the first page looks cool in white, and the star looks great in gold.

Make the white pillars stand out on the Passion Facade

On the second page, the bone-like pillars lined up under the towers are a whitish color.
Color around them in beige and leave the pillars light so they stand out clearly!
For the thick diagonal pillars, make the outside a little darker and the inside bright. That will make them look 3D!

The sky, the pond, and the trees

On the first page, try coloring the sky blue, and the pond light green or light blue.
Color the trees in front dark green and the willow tree yellow-green. That will make the church pop right out!

Imagine the colors of the stained glass

The round windows in the wall are filled with stained glass when you look from the inside.
You cannot tell from the outside, but if you color the windows red, blue, yellow, and green, your coloring page will look bright and lovely!
On the second page, add shadows to the statues using light gray. They will really stand out!

Fun Facts About Sagrada Família

The Inside Looks Like a Forest

Inside the church, there are branched pillars lined up just like tree trunks.
The ceiling is designed to look like a forest full of leaves.
Light coming through the stained glass colors the inside of the church in red, blue, and green.

The Passion Façade Was Made After Gaudí

The sculptures on the second page, the Passion Façade, were not made by Gaudí. They were created by a sculptor named Subirachs.
These clean, boxy statues were finished in 1998, based on Gaudí's designs.
It is fun to compare it with the Nativity Façade made by Gaudí, because it feels so different!

Built with Visitors' Entrance Fees

Sagrada Família is not built with government money. It is built with donations and entrance fees.
People coming from all over the world to see it are helping to build the church!

Cranes for Construction

There are still big cranes standing around Sagrada Família for construction.
Seeing cranes in photos is a special view you can only get because the church is still being built.
In this coloring page, we left out the cranes and drew only the church.
