About Prius
The world's first mass-produced hybrid car
Prius is a car made by Toyota.
It runs by combining two powers: a gasoline engine and an electric motor.
Cars like this are called hybrid cars.
The first-generation Prius, which came out in 1997, was the world's very first mass-produced hybrid passenger car.
The slogan when it went on sale was "Just in time for the 21st century."
How a hybrid works
When Prius starts moving or drives slowly, it uses power from the motor.
When it speeds up or goes up a hill, the engine and motor work hard together.
When you step on the brakes, the motor changes into a generator and saves electricity in the battery.
This cuts down on gasoline, so it can go a long way on just a little fuel.
The name "Prius" comes from a Latin word that means "ahead".
It holds the wish to create a car of the future ahead of all other cars.
From a sedan to a 5-door
The 1st generation came out in 1997 as a sedan with four doors and a trunk.
The 2nd generation came out in 2003 and became a 5-door with a big door at the back.
When you look at it from the side, the roof slopes smoothly down to the back from its highest point.
This shape is designed to help the air flow smoothly over it.
The 3rd generation came out in 2009 and became super popular.
In 2010, it broke the record for the most cars sold in Japan in one year.
Sharper 4th and 5th generations
The 4th generation came out in 2015.
It is a bold car with sharp lights and triangle-shaped parts.
The 5th generation came out in 2023 with a much lower, cool shape just like a sports car.
Prius has won Japan Car of the Year three times, for the 1st, 3rd, and 5th generations.

How to Color Prius
Try copies of the real colors

Prius also comes in other colors like red, black, and blue.
Pick your favorite generation and color it just like the real thing!
How to color the smooth car body
Prius has a smooth, rounded shape to help the wind flow over it easily.
Leave a little white space on the hood and roof to make it look like light is shining on it.
If you use a slightly darker color on the bottom of the car and around the tires, the shape will look 3D!
For the 3rd generation light blue, color it light blue first, then add blue over the bottom of the doors. It will look wonderful!
Windows and lights
Color the window glass with light blue or gray, and leave diagonal white lines to make it look like real glass.
The 4th and 5th generations have sharp, long, and thin lights.
Leave the inside of the lights white and color just the edges with light gray to make them look shiny and bright!
Look closely at the area around the back window from the 2nd generation onward, and color each part neatly.
Grille and bumper
Color the long air intake under the bumper with dark gray or black.
If you put a dark color between the thin lines, it will stand out nicely.
The 5th generation has a big opening under the bumper. Color it black to make it look cool and sharp!
Tires and wheels
Color the tires with dark gray or black.
Silver is the standard color for the wheels.
The 1st generation wheels have a cover shaped like a windmill!
For the 5th generation's big wheels, color the spaces between the spokes with dark gray to make them look 3D.
Fun Facts About Prius
Chosen 3 Times as Japan's Top Car

A Huge Help as a Taxi
Because Prius uses only a little gas, it has often been used for taxis that drive long distances.
Prius taxis started driving around when the 2nd generation came out.
If you see one in town, check your coloring page to see which generation Prius it is!
Making Electricity on the Roof

While parked, it used that electricity to blow air inside the car so it would not get too hot.
It is a great eco-friendly idea that even uses the power of the sun!
Good Design Grand Award
