About Dachshund
A long body and short legs are its charming features! Dachshund!
Because of its unique shape, the Dachshund is a super lovable dog that is sometimes called a "sausage dog" or a "hot dog". Its long body, short legs, and floppy ears are so cute!
Where did it come from?
The Dachshund comes from Germany. In German, its name means "badger dog", because "Dachs" means "badger" and "Hund" means "dog"! Just like its name says, it used to be a brave hunting dog that chased badgers and foxes right into their dens.
Secrets of its body
The long body and short legs of the Dachshund were the perfect shape for going into the narrow, dark dens where badgers lived. With a strong chest and powerful legs, it was also great at digging dirt.
Different sizes and coat types, too!
Dachshunds are divided into a few types based on their body size and coat type.
- Size: There are 3 sizes: the biggest "Standard", the popular "Miniature", and the smallest "Kaninchen".
- Coat Type: There are also 3 coat types.
- Smooth Coat: The hair is short and shiny.
- Long Coat: The hair is long, and the fluffy hair on its ears and tail looks elegant.
- Wire Coat: The hair is a bit stiff, and its cute eyebrows and beard are its best features.
What kind of personality does it have?
The Dachshund is cheerful and full of energy! It loves to play and is very curious. Because it was originally a hunting dog, it is brave and smart, but it can also be a little stubborn sometimes. It loves its owner and can be very affectionate, which is so cute!
So many coat colors!
Dachshunds come in many different coat colors. You can find them in red, a black and tan mix, cream, chocolate, and more. The spotted pattern called "dapple" is also very popular.
How to Color Dachshund
How to Choose Colors
Dachshunds come in many coat colors! You can look them up in a picture book, or color your Dachshund in any color you like!
- Popular colors: The most common color is bright brown (red). "Black & Tan," with a black body and brown eyebrows, cheeks, and paws, is also cool and very much like a Dachshund! Cream and chocolate are wonderful colors, too.
- Patterns: It is also fun to try "dapple," which has spotted patterns on the body. Try drawing patterns with a color lighter than the base color.
- Eyes and nose: Gently color the eyes black or dark brown. Make the nose black and shiny to make your dog look full of energy!
- Ears: The long, floppy ears are its best feature! Color them carefully in the same color as the body.
Let's Show Shiny and Fluffy Fur!
What kind of fur does the Dachshund you are coloring have? Try coloring while you imagine it!
- For Smooth Coat: Since the fur is short, sharpen your colored pencil and color along the direction of the fur. This makes it look nice and shiny!
- For Long Coat: Color the fur on the ears, chest, and tail softly with longer lines. This gives it a fluffy and elegant look!
- For Wire Coat: Draw short lines facing different directions. This can make the fur look rough and wire-haired!
How to Make it Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Lights"!
Let's make the Dachshund's long body look 3D. Places that become shadows are:
- Under the tummy
- Inside the floppy ears and under the neck
- Between the short legs and long body
If you color these places a little darker, it will look real! On the other hand, if you leave the middle of the long back a little lighter, it will look like light is shining on it.
Draw a Fun Background!
- Walk path: Draw your dog running happily on the park grass! It is also fun to add a ball or a favorite toy.
- Inside the room: A Dachshund curled up sleeping in a soft bed or relaxing by the sofa is very cute, too.
Tips for Enjoying Your Coloring Page!
You do not have to use real colors. Using your favorite colors is the best! A polka-dot Dachshund or a rainbow Dachshund would be so much fun. Finish your very own special Dachshund!
