Short legs and a cute wiggly bottom! The Corgi!

The Corgi is a doggie with short legs, a long body, and a cute face just like a fox. Everyone loves seeing them run around with lots of energy, and watching their cute bottoms wiggle as they walk. They have an official name called the "Welsh Corgi Pembroke".

Where did they come from?

The Corgi came from a region called Wales in the UK. Long ago, they worked as "herding dogs" helping people by chasing and guiding cows and sheep. People say their short legs helped them duck quickly so the cows would not kick them.

Where is the Corgi's tail?

You might think that a Corgi has no tail, but that is actually not true. There are reasons why many of them have short tails.

• Long ago, when they worked as herding dogs with cows, people made their tails short when they were babies so cows would not step on their long tails and hurt them.
• People also said it kept poop from getting on their tails, or stopped stickers in the grass from poking them and causing sickness. For a herding Corgi, it might have been to stop sickness from spreading to the cows.
• A long time ago in the UK, people had to pay a "dog tax" on dogs with tails. People say owners started cutting tails to avoid paying this tax. Back then, many different dogs had their tails cut, not just the Corgi.
• People also say they cut tails so no one would mistake them for foxes. They naturally have fluffy tails like a fox, so their tails were cut so hunters would not shoot them by mistake.
• Having no tail became a special feature for the Corgi. To keep them looking this way, many still have their tails removed or cut short today.
• Some Corgi dogs are born with short tails from the start.

Today, more people want to be kind to animals, so more Corgi dogs keep their tails. That is why you can find a Corgi with a long, fluffy tail just like a fox!

A face like a fox

With big pointy ears and a long snout, they look just like a fox and seem very smart. Their happy face that always looks like a smile is another reason to love the Corgi.

What are they like?

The Corgi is very active and loves to play! They are super smart, so they are great at learning tricks and training. They love their owners, and being with their family makes them happiest. They can be a little greedy with food, but that is part of their charm!

The legend of riding with fairies

An old story from Wales says that fairies used to ride on the Corgi. There is a lovely legend that the marks on their back are "saddle marks" left by the fairies riding them.

They have many fur colors!

A Corgi mainly has brown (red) fur, or a mix of colors called sable or fawn (light tan). Many of them also have cute white patches on their neck, chest, legs, and face!

How to Choose Colors

Think of your favorite Corgi and color it in! Looking at a book or a picture while coloring is a great idea too.

• Body color: The color you see most often on a Corgi is bright brown (red). Using a brown that is close to orange or a yellowish brown will look just right. Adding a little bit of dark fur on its back will make it look like a real Corgi too!
• White markings: Putting white markings around its neck, chest, tummy, paws, and on the bridge of its nose will make it look very much like a Corgi. Leave the white parts nice and clean!
• Nose: Color the nose shiny black to make your Corgi look full of energy!
• Ears: Coloring the inside of the ears with just a little bit of light pink makes it look cute.

Let's Make It Look Soft and Fluffy!

A Corgi's bottom and chest fur are soft and fluffy. Let's try to make them look that way!

• If you use colored pencils: Follow the direction of the fur and draw lots of short lines over each other. It will look like soft, fluffy fur!
• If you use crayons: Layer your colors a little bit to give it a warm feel. Gently blend the edges where the white markings meet the rest of the fur to make it look natural.

How to Make It Look 3D: Focus on "Shadows" and "Light"!

Let's make the Corgi's long body and round bottom look 3D. The places that get shadows are:

• Under the tummy
• Between the short legs and the body
• The base of the tail and the inside of the back legs

If you color these places with a color just a little bit darker than the body, your Corgi will look real. On the other hand, leaving the back and forehead bright will make it look like sun is shining on them!

Draw a Fun Background!

• A big grassy field: Corgi dogs used to work on farms, so green grass and a blue sky match them very well! Adding a ball or toys to show a scene where you are playing together is great too.
• Inside a room: Showing your Corgi relaxing in a favorite bed or waiting for a treat is also cute. Try drawing a wooden floor or a colorful rug!
