About Omurice
Everyone Loves It! Soft and Fluffy Omurice
Omurice is a dish made by wrapping ketchup-flavored rice in a thin or fluffy cooked egg. The bright yellow egg and bright red ketchup look so tasty! It is a popular Japanese meal that everyone loves, from kids to grown-ups.
Which Country Did It Come From?
Omurice looks like a dish from another country, but it was actually born in Japan. People say that Western-style restaurants in Japan created it about 100 years ago during the Meiji and Taisho eras. They put "omelet" and "rice" together, so it was named "Omurice"!
What Is Inside?
The inside of a basic Omurice is usually "chicken rice," which is fried chicken and onions flavored with ketchup. But depending on the restaurant or home, people might use bacon or ham, or even use "butter rice" cooked with butter instead of ketchup!
So Many Kinds of Sauce!
There are many different sauces you can put on top of Omurice, too. Sweet and sour ketchup is the classic choice, but you can also use rich brown "demiglace sauce" or pure white "white sauce." Recently, the kind of egg that spreads out soft and runny when you cut it with a knife is very popular, too!
How to Color Omurice
Let's Color the Yummy Egg!
The star of Omurice is definitely the yellow egg! Let's color it so it looks warm and soft.
- Basic colors: Use bright yellow or golden yellow and color it a lot.
- Cooked spots: If it is a thin egg wrap, you can add a little light brown or orange to show yummy cooked spots.
- Shiny light: Leave the top part white where the light hits. This makes it look shiny and fresh-cooked!
Choose Your Sauce!
The color of the sauce on top tells you the flavor of your Omurice. Pick your favorite sauce and color it in!
- Ketchup: Color it with bright red. It looks great next to the yellow egg! If you leave a little white space in the middle, it will look smooth and shiny.
- Demi-glace sauce: Color it with dark brown or deep brown. It will look fancy, just like Omurice at a big restaurant!
- White sauce: Use the white paper! Color just a little light blue or gray for the shadows, and it will look like creamy white sauce.
Do Not Forget the Sides and the Plate
Finish your picture by coloring the plate and the vegetables next to your Omurice.
- Green vegetables: If you see parsley, broccoli, or tomato stems, use green or yellow-green. Green makes the red and yellow pop!
- The plate: You can use any color you like! Simple colors like white, cream, or light blue make the food look extra yummy. Drawing your favorite patterns is super fun, too!
Tips to Make It Look 3D
To show the round shape of the egg, add shadows near the bottom plate and under the sauce. Use a slightly darker yellow or orange to make it look big and fluffy! If you can see the chicken rice inside, color it orange to look like little rice grains.
