About Pizza

Everyone's Favorite! Pizza with Melted Cheese!

Pizza is a dish made by baking a flat, round dough topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and all kinds of toppings. When you pick up a hot slice of Pizza, the cheese stretches out long and tastes super yummy! It is the perfect food to share with everyone at parties and celebrations.

Which Country Was Pizza Born In?

Pizza was born in a European country called "Italy." A city called "Naples" in Italy is especially famous for it. Long ago, it is said to have started when people spread garlic and oil on flat bread and ate it. It became a red Pizza after tomatoes were brought over from the American continent in the 16th century or later.

"Margherita" Was Named After a Queen

One especially famous Pizza is the "Margherita." Long ago, it was made when Queen Margherita of Italy visited Naples. The three colors—the red of the tomatoes, the white of the mozzarella cheese, and the green of the basil—are the exact same colors as the Italian flag.

How Is It Made?

To make Pizza, dough is made by mixing flour, water, and yeast, and then stretched thin by spinning it around with hands. Toppings are put on top, and it is baked in a super hot oven called a "stone oven." Because it is baked all at once at a high heat of around 400 degrees, the outside gets crispy and the inside gets nice and chewy.

So Many Kinds of Pizza

There are lots of different kinds of Pizza. There is Pizza with just cheese, meat Pizza topped with salami and sausage, seafood Pizza topped with shrimp and squid, and even sweet and sour Pizza topped with pineapple. The taste and look are different depending on the country and shop.

How to Color Pizza

How to Choose Colors That Look Yummy

When you color your Pizza coloring page, use lots of "warm colors" like red, orange, yellow, and brown! This makes your Pizza look super hot, freshly baked, and delicious.

  • Crust: For the crispy outer edge, use light brown, orange, or ocher (yellow-brown) to show that it is baked just right.
  • Cheese: Color the melty cheese with yellow or cream color. Adding a little yellow looks richer and yummier than leaving it plain white!
  • Tomato Sauce: Color the sauce peeking out between the toppings with bright red or orange.

Color the Toppings Brightly!

There are so many toppings on top of the Pizza! Try picking colors that match each one.

  • Salami and Pepperoni: Color these round meats with a slightly dark red or pink.
  • Green Peppers and Basil: Green veggies really pop next to the red and yellow on your Pizza. Try using vibrant green or yellow-green!
  • Mushrooms and Olives: Color the mushrooms with light brown or tan, and the olives with black or dark green to make them look real.

Add Grill Marks to Make It Look Super Real!

When a Pizza is baked in a shop, it gets a few dark burnt spots. That is the secret to its yummy baked flavor!

  • Try adding a little bit of dark brown on top of the puffy crust or the edges of the cheese. Adding these "baked spots" makes it look like a real Pizza baked in an oven!

Make It Shiny and Juicy!

Tasty oil comes out of the baked cheese and salami. If you leave a tiny spot white instead of coloring it all in, it looks like light is shining on it! This makes your Pizza look shiny and juicy.

Have Fun with the Background Too!

You can draw drinks or a salad next to your Pizza! Drawing a red-and-white checkered tablecloth is also a great idea. It makes it feel just like a real Italian restaurant!

Fun Facts About Pizza

Why do people spin Pizza dough around with their hands?

Have you ever seen someone spin and stretch dough by hand when making Pizza? There is a reason for this! If you crush it with a rolling pin, the air inside the dough gets pushed out. By stretching it gently by hand, air stays inside the dough, and the crust puffs up when it bakes. This is called "cornicione" in Italian!

Why do they bake it in a stone oven?

Unlike regular home ovens (which reach 200–250°C), a stone oven (wood-fired oven) gets as hot as 400°C to 500°C! Because it bakes all at once at high heat, the baking time is super short at about 1 to 1.5 minutes. This keeps too much moisture from escaping the dough, making it "crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside!"
