About Ramen
Let’s Go on a Tasty Ramen Adventure!
Ramen is a super popular noodle dish born in Japan. It has warm, yummy soup with lots of toppings. The taste and look are completely different depending on the shop!
Ramen Secrets: Noodles!
The star of Ramen is definitely the noodles! There are many kinds of noodles.
- Thin Noodles: These are thin and smooth. They catch the soup really well, so you can eat them up in a flash!
- Thick Noodles: These are thick and chewy. They are very filling and soak up lots of soup flavor.
- Wavy Noodles: Since these noodles are wiggly, they catch the soup nicely and are easy to slurp.
- Straight Noodles: These are straight noodles. You can enjoy how firm they feel and how smoothly they slide down your throat!
Noodles are made by mixing flour, water, and a special thing called "kansui." Adding kansui gives the noodles the classic firm feel and flavor of Ramen.
Ramen Secrets: Soup!
The soup is the most important part of Ramen, where each shop shows off its special recipe. It takes a lot of time to simmer and make it just right!
- Tonkotsu Soup: This is a white, creamy soup made by simmering pork bones for a long time. It is rich and has a deep, yummy flavor.
- Shoyu Soup: This is a savory soup with a soy sauce base. There are many flavors, from light to rich.
- Miso Soup: This is a rich soup with a miso base. It warms up your body, so it is perfect for cold days.
- Shio Soup: This is a clear, light soup with a salt base. It brings out the taste of the ingredients so you can enjoy delicate flavors.
Ramen Secrets: Toppings!
Ramen has lots of yummy toppings! Different shops use different toppings, so just looking at them is fun!
- Chashu: This is pork cooked slowly in a sweet and savory sauce. The meat gets melt-in-your-mouth soft and super tasty.
- Menma: This is made from fermented bamboo shoots. The crunchy texture is so much fun!
- Green Onions: This is a vegetable with a nice aroma. The green color is pretty, and it adds a great pop of flavor.
- Ajitama: This is a soft-boiled egg soaked in sauce. The runny yolk is amazing!
- Nori: This is seaweed with the fresh scent of the ocean. Dipping it in the soup before eating is delicious, too!
Ramen History: How Was It Born?
Ramen comes from noodle dishes brought to Japan from China long ago. People say it started during the Meiji period (about 150 years ago) when noodles made by Chinese people spread in port towns like Yokohama and Kobe.
Then, after World War II, when food was scarce in Japan, Ramen became super popular with everyone because it was easy to make and nutritious. From there, all kinds of Ramen were born all over Japan, and now it is loved by people around the world!
Ramen is a special dish with endless flavors you can make by combining noodles, soup, and toppings. Go find your favorite Ramen!
How to Color Ramen
How to Choose Your Colors
For your Ramen coloring page, try using lots of warm colors that make you feel hungry! It gets even more fun if you paint while imagining a yummy bowl of Ramen.
- Noodles: Light yellow, cream, or light orange look great for the noodles. Try to paint them with wheat colors in mind. It is also fun to make thin noodles or thick noodles a bit lighter or darker.
- Soup: Different soups have different colors, so use your imagination as you color!
- For Tonkotsu soup, use milky white or light beige.
- For Soy Sauce soup, use dark brown or deep brown.
- For Miso soup, use reddish brown or orange-brown.
- For Salt soup, use clear light yellow or very pale gold.
- Chashu Pork: For the meat, brown, reddish brown, or a deeper brown works well to show it was simmered nicely. Color the juicy fat white or light pink to make it look extra melty!
- Menma (Bamboo Shoots): Try using bright brown or yellow-ochre. Adding a little light and dark shading can make them look crunchy!
- Green Onions: Use bright green or yellow-green to make the onions look fresh. Color the white parts with white or very light green.
- Ramen Egg: Make a delicious soft-boiled egg by coloring the egg whites white or very light yellow, and the yolk bright yellow or deep orange.
- Nori (Seaweed): Color it dark green or nearly black-green to make it look nice and crispy!
Make it Look 3D and Delicious!
Each topping on your Ramen has a different shape and feel. Thinking about light and shadows while you color will make it look pop out and look even yummer!
- When using colored pencils: Add a darker color for shadows where toppings curve or overlap. This makes them look round and thick! For example, color the edges of the Chashu pork a bit darker, or add shadows where noodles cross each other.
- When using crayons: Layering your crayons a little can show the shiny oil on the soup or the glossy glaze on the Chashu pork.
Color the Bowl and Background!
- Ramen Bowl: The bowl holding the Ramen comes in many colors depending on the shop, like white, red, or black. Color it any way you like, or draw fun patterns on it!
- Background: It is fun to add a table, a shop, or steam floating up around your Ramen. Draw fluffy steam with light gray or white.
Tips for Enjoying Your Coloring Page!
You do not have to use real colors! It is super fun to make a dream Ramen that makes you think, "I wish I could eat this!" Use your imagination freely to make a blue soup Ramen or pink noodle Ramen!
