About Beluga (White Whale)
The Cute, Pure White Idol of the Sea! Beluga (White Whale)!
Beluga (White Whale)s are a kind of dolphin with pure white bodies. People also call them "white dolphins." They are super popular at aquariums because they look like they are smiling with a gentle face. They live in the cold northern seas, swimming smoothly between icebergs.
Where Do They Live?
Beluga (White Whale)s live in very cold seas in the Northern Hemisphere, like the Arctic Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. They do not mind when the sea freezes over in the winter. They swim under the ice and pop their heads out through cracks to breathe.
The "Melon" on the Head and a Special Neck
Beluga (White Whale)s have a puffy bump on their forehead. This is called a "melon." It is made of fat, so it is squishy and soft. They change the shape of this melon to help them talk to their friends using sounds.
Also, unlike other dolphins, Beluga (White Whale)s can move their necks freely. That is why they can show so many expressions, like nodding or shaking their heads side to side.
They Are Called the "Canaries of the Sea"
Beluga (White Whale)s love to talk a lot! They can make many high-pitched sounds, like squeaks and whistles. Their lovely singing sounds just like a canary bird. That is why they have the wonderful nickname "Canaries of the Sea."
Are Babies White, Too?
Grown-up Beluga (White Whale)s are pure white, but newborn babies are actually dark gray. As they grow up, their skin gets lighter bit by bit. When they become adults, they turn a beautiful, pure white.
Masters of Making Bubble Rings!
Beluga (White Whale)s are super good at blowing air from their mouths to make round "bubble rings." You might see this at an aquarium! It is a fun trick that Beluga (White Whale)s learned all on their own while playing.
Where Does the Name Beluga (White Whale) Come From?
The name Beluga (White Whale) comes from a Russian word that means "white." Just like the name says, their white body—like snow or ice—is what they are most proud of!

How to Color Beluga (White Whale)
How to Choose Your Colors
Beluga (White Whale) has a white body, so you might think, "There is nothing to color!" But if you add light and shadows, your picture will look super cool.
- Basic body color: Use the white paper for the body. Try adding light cyan, light purple, or light gray to the shadow parts. Adding just a little bit of color to the white paper makes it look like it is in the cold ocean.
- Eyes: Color the friendly eyes with black or dark brown. Leave a tiny white spot in the eyes for a sparkle. It will look very cute!
- Inside the mouth: Color the happy, smiling mouth with light pink. This makes it look super sweet!
Let's Make It Look Smooth and Shiny!
The body of Beluga (White Whale) has no hair. It is very smooth and slippery. Color gently so it does not look bumpy.
- If you use colored pencils: Do not press too hard! Softly layer light colors. This makes the skin look soft and smooth.
- If you use crayons: Color the whole body with a white crayon first. Then, add a little light cyan to the shadows. Rub it softly with your finger to blend it smoothly!
How to Make It Look 3D: Let's Add Shadows!
Shadows are very important to make the white body of Beluga (White Whale) look 3D.
- Under the belly
- Under the fins and where they connect to the body
- Under the mouth and under the rounded "melon" on the head
- Where the tail fin starts
Color these spots gently with light cyan or light gray. Leave the sunlit back and the highest part of the forehead pure white. This makes it look round and 3D!
Color the Cold Ocean Background!
- Ocean color: Beluga (White Whale) lives in cold seas. Light cyan, emerald green, or icy blue look great!
- Bubbles (bubble rings): If it is blowing bubbles, trace the outline in blue and leave the inside white. Color the sea around it, but skip the inside of the bubbles. They will look super neat!
- Ice: Draw some floating ice in the sea! Color it white or light cyan to make it feel like the Arctic Ocean.
Tips to Enjoy Coloring!
If you think just white is a bit boring, that is okay! You can make an orange Beluga (White Whale) swimming in the sunset sea. Or try a bluish Beluga (White Whale) in the deep ocean. Have fun coloring with your favorite colors!
