About Sakura Mochi
Sakura Mochi is a traditional Japanese sweet. It is a rice cake wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf. It is a special treat for spring and Doll's Festival! The salted leaf gives off a wonderful smell. It tastes so good with the sweet bean paste inside!
Two Styles from Different Places
In Japan, there are two main types of Sakura Mochi: Kanto style and Kansai style.
-
Kanto Style (Chomeiji)
-
This style looks like a thin crepe. It is made by baking flour batter thinly and rolling sweet bean paste inside.
-
It started in the Edo period. A gatekeeper at Chomeiji Temple by the river pickled cherry leaves in salt and wrapped them around rice cakes to sell.
-
-
Kansai Style (Domyoji)
-
This style uses "Domyoji powder," which is made from steamed, dried, and crushed sticky rice. It is round, bumpy, and soft to chew.
-
It came from a food made to last long at Domyoji Temple in Osaka.
-
Why Use a Cherry Blossom Leaf?
The leaf is not just for decoration! It keeps the rice cake soft and stops it from drying out. Its salty taste makes the sweet taste even better, and it adds a lovely smell. This smell comes from something called "coumarin." You can choose if you want to eat the leaf or not. You can eat it together to enjoy the sweet and salty taste, or you can take it off and just eat the sweet rice cake. Both ways are great!
How to Color Sakura Mochi
Here are some tips to make your Sakura Mochi look real and yummy!
1. Make the mochi look fresh and 3D
-
Use light and dark colors: Do not color it all with just one color. Use light pink in the middle. Use dark pink for the edges and shadows. This makes it pop!
-
Kansai style shiny look: If it has a bumpy rice texture, leave a few white spots. These highlights make the mochi look shiny and fresh.
2. Make the cherry leaf look real
-
Pick the best color: Dark green or olive green works better than bright green. It makes the salted leaf look very real.
-
Draw the leaf lines: Draw thin lines along the leaf veins. Use deep green or brown. This makes the leaf look crisp.
3. Make the plate look great
-
Choose nice plate colors: Color the plate black or soft beige. This makes the pink Sakura Mochi stand out. It feels just like spring!
-
Color the little details: Color the sweet picker like brown wood. Careful work makes your picture look like a cozy spring tea time!
Fun Facts About Sakura Mochi
Are the shapes different in the east and west of Japan?
Did you know that there are two types of Sakura Mochi? In eastern Japan, people usually make "Chomeiji," which wraps sweet bean paste in a cooked batter that looks like a crepe. In western Japan, people usually make "Domyoji," which wraps sweet bean paste in chewy rice dough. It is so interesting that the shapes are different depending on where you live!
Can you eat the leaf?
The leaf wrapped on the outside is a cherry blossom leaf that has been pickled in salt. It is soft, so of course you can eat it just as it is! The salty leaf makes the sweet bean paste taste even sweeter, so eating them together is super yummy.
The leaf has an amazing job!
There are important reasons to wrap the leaf around it, not just for looks! The leaf has a "drying prevention" job to stop the mochi from getting dry and hard. It also has a "flavoring" job to give the mochi a lovely cherry blossom smell. It is packed with smart ideas from long ago!
A Japanese sweet that tells us spring is here
The pink mochi and green leaf together look just like spring scenery! People often eat Sakura Mochi for Hinamatsuri, the Doll Festival. When you take a bite, the smell of spring fills your mouth and makes you feel happy!
