The "Su" in "Suika"

The hiragana "Su" is the 3rd letter in the "Sa-Shi-Su-Se-So" group.

Hiragana "Su" Came From the Kanji "寸"

Hiragana were made long ago by simplifying kanji characters.
The kanji that became Hiragana "Su" is "寸".
The horizontal line of "寸" became the horizontal line of Hiragana "Su". The vertical line and dot turned into the line that loops around.
If you put "寸" and Hiragana "Su" side by side, you can see how they look alike!

Tips for Writing Hiragana "Su"

You write Hiragana "Su" in 2 strokes.
For the 1st stroke, draw a long horizontal line from left to right.
For the 2nd stroke, go down through the horizontal line, make a small loop in the middle, go down, and sweep to the bottom left.
Be careful not to make the loop too big so your Hiragana "Su" looks nice and neat.
If you add two small dots (tenten) to Hiragana "Su", it becomes "Zu"!

Let's Find Words Starting with "Su"

Some words that start with "Su" are sushi, suna (sand), suzu (bell), suzume (sparrow), and suitou (water bottle).
Words like "suzu" and "suzume" have both "Su" and "Zu", so they are fun to say out loud!
Try listening to how "Su" and "Zu" sound different!

Color the big "す" with your favorite colors

Try using different colors for the top line and the looping line of the big outlined "す".
It will look so cute if you match the watermelon and make the top line green and the looping line red.
If you leave the inside of the loop white, the shape will stand out clearly.

Green and red are the main colors for the watermelon

For the whole watermelon, color it yellow-green all over, and make the stripes dark green.
For the sliced watermelon, make the inside red and the outer rind green. If you color the thin part in between white or light yellow-green, it will look just like a real one!
Color the seeds black.

On the second page, color a sparrow and sushi too

Color the sparrow with brown and dark brown, and do not forget to color the black marks on its cheeks.
For the sushi, leave the rice white and make the toppings red or orange to make it look yummy.

Trace Hiragana "Su" one by one with your pencil

There are eight light gray Hiragana "Su" lined up in the boxes at the bottom right.
Hold your pencil the right way and trace over the gray lines slowly.
The dotted lines inside the boxes show you where the center of the letter is.
Trace the looping part of the second stroke slowly and carefully.
It is okay to go slow at first, so write each one nicely.
When you finish tracing, check to see if you stayed inside the gray lines.
You can even draw a big reward circle on the one you wrote the best!

Is Watermelon a Vegetable or a Fruit?

Watermelon is sweet and eaten like a fruit, but because it grows on a vine in a farm field, it is sometimes classified as a vegetable.
Melons and strawberries are thought of in the same way too.
Watermelons belong to the same gourd family as cucumbers and melons.
Watermelon flowers are tiny and yellow.

Watermelon Is Mostly Water

About 90% of a watermelon is water.
That is why eating it on a hot summer day slakes your thirst.
The Japanese name "Suika" uses the kanji characters for "Western Gourd."

It Came From Africa

It is said that the original home of the watermelon is Africa.
Over a very long time, it spread around the world, and now lots of them are grown in Japan in the summer too.
