About Hiragana "Pyu"
The "Pyu" in "Pyu"
The letter on this coloring page is the Hiragana "Pyu".
The word is "pyu". It is a sound word that shows water or wind rushing out in a thin stream.
The picture on the left shows one water gun and the water shooting "pyu" out from the tip.
The water is drawn with just outline lines.
It feels so good to play with a water gun in the summer, doesn't it?
Two Letters for One Sound
You write Hiragana "Pyu" by combining two letters: "pi" and a small "yu".
Even though you write two letters, you say them together as one sound, instead of separating them into "pi" and "yu".
This kind of sound is called a contracted sound.
If you write it with a big "yu" as "pi-yu", it becomes two sounds, and it can even change the word into something else.
The sound changes depending on whether the small letter is there or not!
How Hiragana "Pyu" Was Made
The letter "pi" is made by adding a little circle (handakuten) to "hi".
Hiragana letters were born a long time ago when people simplified Kanji characters.
The letter "hi" came from simplifying the Kanji "比".
The small "yu" is just a normal "yu" written small, and "yu" came from simplifying the Kanji "由".
Ancient Kanji characters changed over a long time to become the easy letters we use today!
Tips for Writing
You write "hi" in 1 stroke.
Start at the top left, go down in a big curve, go up to the top right, and bring it down a little at the end.
It looks nice if you balance the left and right sides of the middle curve.
To make the circle, write one small ring at the top right after you finish writing the letter.
When writing horizontally, write the small "yu" in the bottom left of the box. When writing vertically, write it small in the top right.
Be careful not to mix up where the circle and the "yu" go!

How to Color Hiragana "Pyu"
Color the Big Hiragana "Pyu" Water-Blue
Try coloring inside the big Hiragana "Pyu" at the top right with your favorite colors.
If you use light blue or blue to match the water gun, the letter will look nice and cool.
If you use completely different colors for "pi" and "yu", it is easy to see how the letter is made.
Make the Water Gun Colorful
Color the water gun with bright colors like red, yellow, green, and orange.
If you change the colors for the handle and the tip where the water comes out, it will look like a cute toy.
Try using a different color for the buttons and trigger to make them stand out!
Color the Water Blue and White
Color the shooting water light blue and leave white lines in the middle. This makes the water look sparkly!
If you trace the edges with a slightly darker blue, the shape of the water will stand out clearly.
You can also draw extra drops of splashing water and color them with light blue dots.
If you color the background light yellow, your picture will look like you are playing under the summer sun.
Trace the Letters with a Pencil
In the boxes at the bottom right, there are 4 sets of light gray Hiragana "Pyu".
Hold your pencil correctly and trace over the gray lines slowly so you do not go outside the lines.
Use the vertical and horizontal center lines inside the boxes as clues. They help you see how big the letters should be and where to put them.
Pay attention to where things go! Put the little circle at the top right, and the small "yu" in the bottom left of the box.
Every time you trace one set, say "pyu" out loud.
When you trace all 4 sets, try writing Hiragana "Pyu" by yourself outside the boxes, too!
Fun Facts About Hiragana "Pyu"
How a Water Gun Works
A water gun is a toy that pushes out the water inside and shoots it through a small hole.
When the hole is small, the water shoots out thin and fast.
It works the same way as when you pinch the end of a hose with your fingers to make the water fly far away!
Bamboo Water Guns
Long ago, kids used bamboo to make water guns and play with them.
They made a small hole at the end of a bamboo tube, then pushed the water out with a stick.
Even today, kids sometimes make them at nature play events!
Rainbows in the Water Spray
On a sunny day, if you spray water with the sun behind your back, you might see a tiny rainbow!
That happens because the sunlight goes through the water drops and splits into many colors.
Try it out when you play with water in the summer!
Rules for Playing
When you play with a water gun, make sure you do not aim at anyone's face or eyes.
After you play, change out of wet clothes so you do not catch a cold.
Have fun playing together!
Water is important, so it is a great idea to use your leftover water to water the flower beds when you are done!
