About Mother's Day

Thank you as always! Mother's Day to show your love to your mom

Mother's Day is a special day to say "thank you" to your mom, who gently watches over you every day. In Japan, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, but people around the world celebrate it in many different ways.

How Mother's Day started

Mother's Day started in America over 100 years ago. A woman named Anna wanted to remember her late mother, Ann Jarvis. So, she handed out white carnations, which were her mother's favorite flower. People say this is how it all began. This sweet feeling spread to many people, and it became the "day to thank your mom" that we have today.

Mother's Day around the world

In some countries, people celebrate Mother's Day on a different date or give different flowers than in Japan.

  • UK: They often celebrate it in March to match a Christian holiday. It is a tradition to eat a special fruitcake called "Simnel cake" as a treat.
  • Thailand: August 12th is their day for moms. This is the birthday of the Queen Mother of Thailand. Instead of carnations, people give pure white jasmine flowers.
  • Australia: It is on the second Sunday of May, just like in Japan. But the popular flower to give is the chrysanthemum. In English, people call this flower "mum," so they choose it because it sounds just like "mum" (mom)!

How to Color Mother's Day

Tips for Coloring Nicely

The petals of the carnation are jagged and very delicate. Here are some ideas to make your coloring page look like a real flower!

  • Overlapping Petals: Carnations have lots of petals sitting on top of each other. Instead of using just one color, try using both light pink and dark red. If you color the petals in the back a little darker, your flower will look fluffy and 3D!
  • Color of the Stem and Leaves: Carnation stems and leaves are a green color that looks a little bit whitish. If you mix a little blue or gray into your bright green, it will look just like a real one.
  • Share Your Feelings with the Background: Try drawing hearts or sparkly shapes around Mother's Day! If you use warm colors like yellow and orange, your artwork will make anyone's heart feel warm just by looking at it.
  • Add a Message: Write words like "Thank you for everything" or "I love you" in the empty space on your coloring page. Your own handwriting will be the very best present.

Fun Facts About Mother's Day

At First, It Was a "White" Carnation

Now, giving a red carnation is standard, but the very first one was a white carnation. It started when Anna gave white flowers to remember her mother. Later, people gave "red" if their mother was healthy and "white" if she had passed away. Today, it is common to give red ones.

Each Country Has a "Mom's Color"

In Thailand, on Mother's Day, many people wear "blue" clothes, which is the symbol for mothers. This is because the Queen Mother's image color is blue. It is fun that each country has a different image color for the celebration!

The Day Phone Calls Get the Busiest of the Year!?

People all over the world make phone calls to thank their mothers. Because of this, Mother's Day is said to be one of the days with the highest number of phone calls in the whole year. Even if they live far away, everyone wants to hear her voice and say "thank you."

The History of Gifts Other Than Flowers

In the old days in Britain, children who went out to work were allowed to go home only on Mother's Day. At that time, they picked flowers by the roadside or baked a special cake for their mother to bring home. This led to the gift-giving habits we have today.
