About Sea lion

Great Adventures at Sea and on Land! Sea lion Secrets and Lives

Sea lion is a marine mammal that loves swimming fast after fish in the ocean and sunbathing on land too. They are well known at aquariums, and they are super smart and friendly animals that can balance a ball on their nose and clap their flippers.

Where Sea lion Lives (Habitat)

Members of the Sea lion family mainly live along the coasts and islands of the Pacific Ocean. They live on many different shores, from the seas near Japan to the California coast in America, and warm islands in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • Places Where Rocks and Beaches Gather: They gather on rocky shores and sandy beaches where the waves are calm. Hundreds or even thousands of friends come together to make a huge colony.
  • Why They Come Up on Land: They come up on land to rest, give birth and raise babies, and soak up the sun (sunbathe) to stay warm.

Amazing Bodies and Special Abilities

Sea lion has many amazing powers and features to help them live in the harsh ocean.

  • Ability to Dive Deep: To dive deep, they breathe out before going under the sea. They can stay down deeper than 100 meters for several minutes!
  • Talking in Loud Voices: Sea lion makes very loud "Arf! Arf!" noises. They use their voices to find their babies or friends in the colony, and to protect their own space.
  • Cool Front Flippers and Walking Style: They move their huge wing-like front flippers to swim through the water just like they are flying. On land, they can fold their back flippers forward and run really well on all fours.
  • Favorite Foods and How They Catch Them: They love eating fish like horse mackerel and chub mackerel, as well as squid and octopus. They feel ripples in the water with the long whiskers around their mouth, so they can quickly find and catch food even in the dark sea.
  • Thick Fat to Stay Warm: They store thick layer of fat under their skin so their bodies do not get cold in the chilly ocean.

How to Color Sea lion

How to Choose Your Colors

When you color the Sea lion coloring page, think about how it looks when it is wet and when it is dry!

  • Body Color: A Sea lion's body is dark brown, black, or dark gray. When their body is wet, it looks black and shiny. When it is dry, it looks a little lighter brown.
  • Belly Color: If you color the belly area with a lighter brown or beige than the back, it will look just like a real one!
  • Whiskers and Eyes: Try coloring the long whiskers on its face white or yellow, and the eyes black and cute and big.

Let's Show It Swimming Smoothly!

You can make your picture come alive by adding the sea and rocks where the Sea lion lives.

  • Water Drops and Shine: Leave a little white spot on its body for shiny light, or draw water splashes around it. That will make the Sea lion look like it is swimming happily!
  • Rocks and Sun: Color the rocks the Sea lion sits on with brown or gray, and draw bright sunlight shining down from above.

Try Creative Backgrounds

Add your favorite world to the picture! You can draw a scene swimming nicely in the sea, or resting on rocky shores. Making a fun scene with a Sea lion playing with a ball on a zoo stage is great, too.

Tips for Enjoying Your Coloring Page!

You do not have to use real colors. You can use any colors that make you think, "It would be so fun if a Sea lion looked like this!" A colorful and bright Sea lion is lots of fun, too!

Fun Facts About Sea lion

Super High-Powered Whiskers

The impressive whiskers around the Sea lion's mouth have lots of nerves in them. They can catch tiny water waves that you cannot see when fish swim, so the Sea lion can catch prey perfectly even in the pitch-black ocean where light does not reach.

They Can Run on Land

Seals look similar and move on land by sliding on their bellies, but the Sea lion can bend its back legs under its body. They can lift their bodies up on all four legs and move quickly on land, just as fast as a human walks.

You Can Spot Them Easily by Their Ear Flaps

If you look closely at the side of a Sea lion's head, you will see a tiny ear flap. Seals do not have ear flaps and just have holes, so if you look here, you can tell right away if it is a Sea lion or a seal.

They Can Dive Deep Into the Ocean

The Sea lion is a great swimmer and can hold its breath to dive deeper than 100 meters. They have a special body system that slows down their heartbeat to save oxygen.
