Cherry is said to come from Turkey and the Caucasus region. More than 2,000 years ago, soldiers from the Roman Empire spread Cherry across Europe. It came to Japan in the Meiji period from overseas, which is when people started growing it here.

Where Does Cherry Grow?

Cherry grows in places with cool weather. In Japan, Yamagata, Aomori, and Hokkaido are famous for growing lots of Cherry. When it gets plenty of sunlight and cool breezes, Cherry grows up to be sweet and delicious!

How Cherry Grows

In spring, Cherry blooms with lots of white flowers that look like cherry blossoms. Bees and other insects visit the flowers, and soon they turn into small fruits. They are green at first, but as they soak up the sun, they turn bright red and ready to eat!

• Sato Nishiki: This is the most popular Cherry in Japan. It is super sweet and is called the King of Cherry!
• Beni Shuho: This Cherry is bigger than Sato Nishiki, firm to bite into, and very sweet.
• Gassan Nishiki: A rare yellow Cherry! It is super sweet and is called the Queen of Cherry.

How to Choose Colors: Make Cherry Shine Like a Shiny Gem!

When you color Cherry, the trick is to show off its yummy color and smooth, shiny look. Use reds and yellows while adding bright spots and shadows to make it look even more real!

• Colors of Cherry:
  • Red: When you think of Cherry, you think of bright red! Use red as your main color. Mix in a little pink or orange to give it a soft, gentle feel.
  • Yellow: If you color yellow Cherries (like Gassan Nishiki), use yellow as your main color.
