About Persimmon
Autumn Flavor! Persimmon!
Persimmon is a fruit with a round orange or yellow shape and a sweet, melt-in-your-mouth texture. In autumn, many fruits grow on the tree. Along with the autumn leaves, they decorate the autumn scenery beautifully. You can eat it as it is, make dried Persimmon, or use it in cooking. There are many ways to enjoy it!
The Origin of Persimmon
It is said that Persimmon came from East Asia. It was brought to Japan from China about 1,300 years ago. After that, many types of Persimmon were made in Japan and spread all over the world. It is called "Kaki" in English too. You can see how Japanese culture has spread around the world!
Where Does It Grow?
Persimmon grows in warm areas with lots of sunlight. In Japan, Nara, Wakayama, and Fukuoka prefectures are famous places where many Persimmon fruits are grown. A Persimmon tree grows very big and bears a lot of fruit.
How Persimmon Grows
In spring, the Persimmon blooms with white flowers that have a hint of green. When these flowers are pollinated, they slowly turn into small fruits. From summer to autumn, they soak up lots of sunlight, gradually turn orange, and ripen into a delicious treat.
Different Kinds of Persimmon
There are many types of Persimmon.
- Fuyu Persimmon: This is the sweet Persimmon grown the most in Japan. It is very sweet and has a nice, crunchy texture.
- Jiro Persimmon: This sweet Persimmon is as popular as the Fuyu Persimmon. Its fruit has a square-like shape.
- Hiratanenashi Persimmon: This is a seedless Persimmon, so it is very easy to eat. It is a bitter type of Persimmon, so people remove the bitterness using a special way before eating it.
- Astringent Persimmon: You cannot eat this bitter Persimmon just as it is. People dry it to make dried Persimmon or soak it in shochu to remove the bitterness before eating.
