About Snowman
Star of Winter Snow Play
Snowman is a winter snow play favorite that you make by rolling up fallen snow.
In the snowy northern areas, lots of Snowmen line up in front of houses and in parks when winter comes.
When you roll a small snowball on the snow, snow sticks to it and it gets bigger and bigger.
Make two big snowballs and stack them up, and your Snowman is all done.
Add eyes with coal or buttons, arms with tree branches, and a hat with a bucket to make a Snowman full of bright expressions!
Snowmen in Japan and Snowmen Around the World
Japanese Snowmen usually have 2 parts, a head and a body.
It came to be called "Snowman" in Japan because it looks like the shape of a traditional Daruma doll.
In America and Europe, they often make Snowman with 3 parts.
Giving them a carrot nose, a hat, and a scarf is also a common way to make them in other countries.
3 Coloring Pages
The first page is a smiling Snowman wearing a bucket hat and a scarf. The lines are thick, so even small children can color it easily.
The second page shows children making a Snowman in a park. You can see a child rolling a snowball, a child putting on a bucket, and a child putting on a carrot nose.
The third page is a detailed picture of a snowy village at night. Look for different Snowmen, snow rabbits, snow huts, and glowing snowflakes in the sky!
Snow Rabbits and Snow Huts
A Snowman is not the only thing you can make with snow.
A snow rabbit is made by rolling snow into an oval shape, using red berries for eyes, and leaves for ears.
A snow hut is a snow house made by piling snow high and scooping out the inside.
For more snow day fun, we also have a snowball fight coloring page!
When You Make a Snowman
When you make a Snowman, wear gloves and boots so your hands and feet do not get wet.
If you stay outside for a long time, your body will get cold, so go inside to warm up now and then.
When it gets sunny and warm, the Snowman you made will slowly melt away.
Before it melts, it is fun to keep it in a photo or draw a picture of it!
If you live in a place where it does not snow, try making your very own Snowman with a coloring page!
How to Color Snowman
Tips to Make a White Snowman Look Real
Snowman is white, so you can leave him uncolored.
If you add just a little bit of light blue or light gray around his body and at the bottom, your round snowball will look 3D!
Leave the top white where the light hits him.
Use Bright Colors for Accessories
Pick colors like red, blue, or green for the scarf and hat so they pop against the white snow.
For a striped scarf, it looks cute if you alternate two colors.
Try orange for the carrot nose, brown for the stick arms, and light blue or red for the bucket!
Change the Time of Day with Sky Colors
If you make the sky light blue, it becomes a sunny snowy day.
If you use dark blue or indigo, it turns into a snowy night like in the third page.
If you leave white snowflakes in the night sky, they will look like they are sparkling!
The Children's Clothes
For the children's jackets and hats on the second page, give each person a different color to make a fun, lively picture.
If you make their cheeks light pink, they will look cheerful on a cold winter day.
Boots in red or yellow stand out really well in the white snow!
Snowflakes
For the snowflakes in the sky on the third page, trace around them with light blue or light purple to make them look like shiny crystals.
It also looks pretty if you color each hexagon pattern with a different color.
Color the candle light inside the snow hut with yellow and orange to make it look nice and warm.
Fun Facts About Snowman
Why It's Called "Daruma"
The name of the Snowman comes from a lucky charm called a daruma.
A daruma is a round decoration with no arms or legs.
The shape of stacked snowballs looks just like a daruma, so people started calling it a "Snowman".
Snow That Sticks vs. Snow That Doesn't
The best snow for making a Snowman is wet snow with a little water in it.
On super cold days, the snow is dry and fluffy, so it won't pack together when you squeeze it. That makes it hard to build a Snowman.
Snow on days when the temperature is close to 0 degrees is perfect for making a Snowman!
Giant Snowmen
In places with a lot of snow, people sometimes make giant Snowmen that are much taller than a grown-up for snow festivals.
In fact, there is a record in the world for making a Snowman that was over 30 meters tall!
When building a giant Snowman, people sometimes use heavy machinery to gather snow.
Working together to make one is a big winter project, isn't it?
Snowflakes Are Hexagons
If you look closely at the snow falling from the sky, each piece is a hexagon crystal.
They say no two crystals are the same, and they come in all kinds of shapes.
If you catch snow on black paper, you can see the crystals with a magnifying glass!
