About Fishing boat
Boats for catching fish
A Fishing boat is a boat used to catch fish, squid, and shellfish in the sea.
Japan is surrounded by the sea, so you can see many Fishing boat ships in ports all over the country.
They come in many sizes and shapes, from small rowboats to big ships that stay out at sea for months.
A special thing about Japanese Fishing boat ships is that many of them have "Maru" in their names, like "something-Maru."
Different shapes for different fish
Each Fishing boat carries different gear depending on the fish it catches and how it catches them.
Boats that pull nets have big rollers and reels to wind up the nets.
Squid-fishing boats have a long line of lightbulbs called fish-attracting lights to shine on the dark sea at night.
You can tell what kind of fish a Fishing boat catches just by looking at its gear.
On top of the steering room, there are radar antennas and a fish finder to search for schools of fish.
Big-catch flags
When a Fishing boat comes back to port with lots of fish, or during festivals and New Year's, it flies bright, colorful flags called big-catch flags.
These flags show big, lucky pictures like red sea breams, waves, cranes, and treasure ships.
When a new boat is built, friends give big-catch flags as a gift to celebrate.

The 1st page shows a side view of a Fishing boat parked at the port. There is no background, so you can focus on coloring the boat.
The 2nd page is a small rowboat. The 3rd page shows small Fishing boat ships lined up in a port. The 4th page is a Fishing boat heading out of the port through white waves.
The 5th page is a Fishing boat with big-catch flags. The 6th page shows big-catch flags and a port with Mount Fuji in the background.
The 7th page shows the lights on a squid Fishing boat. The 8th page shows a Fishing boat with a big machine to wind up nets.
Every picture was drawn from a real photograph!
Fish that Fishing boat ships catch
A Fishing boat catches fish that you eat every day, like pacific saury, tuna, and japanese flying squid.
The fresh fish go to the fish market at the port, and then trucks bring them to stores.
Try to imagine what kind of Fishing boat caught the fish on your dinner table, and how they did it!
When you visit a port, take a close look at the gear on the Fishing boat ships parked there.

How to Color Fishing boat
The White Body and Colorful Gear
Most Fishing boat bodies are white. You can leave them uncolored, or add shadows with light gray or light blue.
If you color the bottom edge of the boat red or dark brown, and the floats on top orange or yellow, it will look just like a Fishing boat in a port.
Inside small Fishing boat models, it is often painted light blue or green.
Make the Big Catch Flags Super Colorful
Use lots of deep, bright colors like red, blue, yellow, and green for the Big Catch Flags.
Color the sea bream red, the waves blue and white, and the sunrise red and orange to make a lucky flag.
Color the bamboo leaves at the top of the pole green.
It is also fun to think of your own pictures and make your very own original Big Catch Flag!
The Sea and the Sky
Color the sea blue or blue-green, and the sky light blue.
If you leave white spots along the wave lines, the sea will look like it is sparkling.
Leave the white waves made by the moving boat uncolored, too.
Light Bulbs on the Squid Fishing Boat
The fish-attracting lights on the 7th coloring page are glass bulbs. Color just the edges with light blue or light gray, and leave the inside white.
If you want to make it a night scene, color the sky and sea dark blue or indigo. Put some yellow around the light bulbs to make them look like they are glowing!
The Port with Mount Fuji
On the 6th coloring page, leave the snow at the top of Mount Fuji white, and color the bottom part blue-purple or dark blue.
If you make the factory chimneys red and white stripes like real ones, the port scenery will look super cool!
Fun Facts About Fishing boat
Squid gather near light
A squid Fishing boat turns on fish-attracting lights in the dark sea at night to make it bright.
Squid gather around to eat the small fish and plankton that come to the light.
These lights are super strong. You can even see the lights from squid Fishing boat fleets in the Sea of Japan in photos of Earth at night taken from space!
The "Maru" in boat names
Japanese boats have long had "Maru" at the end of their names.
No one knows for sure why they use "Maru." But people say it carries a wish for things to go smoothly and for the boat to come back safely.
Fishers get up early
Fishers often leave the port to catch fish early in the morning while it is still dark.
The fish they catch are put up for auction that very day at the port's fish market, and then they go to the stores.
Tires that protect the boat
Have you ever seen old tires or round floats hanging on the side of a Fishing boat?
These are cushions to keep the boat from getting damaged if it bumps into the dock or another boat.
The long, narrow baskets on the edge of the small boat in the second picture do the same job!
How big catch flags started
People say big catch flags started long ago as a way to tell people waiting at the port from far away that a boat caught lots of fish.
Today, you can see them as happy decorations at fish port festivals, too!
