About Cherry picker

A vehicle for working up high

Cherry picker is a vehicle that lifts a platform for people to stand on way up into the air.
It is super useful when working in places that are hard to reach with a ladder, like electric wires on utility poles, road signs, or bridges.
Many of them have working machinery mounted on a truck bed, so they can drive right down the road to get to the job site.
In English, they are also called bucket trucks or cherry pickers.

A reaching arm and the bucket at the tip

On the back of Cherry picker, there is a long arm called a boom.
The boom can lift up, stretch out, and spin around to carry the top right where the work needs to be done.
The box attached to the end is the bucket for people to ride in.
A crane truck also has a long boom, but a crane truck lifts heavy cargo, while Cherry picker lifts people!
The first coloring page shows Cherry picker from the side with its boom folded down, and the bucket rests near the back of the truck bed.
Right behind the driver's seat, you can see a spare tire mounted upright.

Outriggers to plant its feet

When it stretches its arm high up, you might worry that the vehicle could tip over!
So before starting work, feet called outriggers come out from the body to plant themselves firmly on the ground.
The outriggers hold the vehicle steady and flat before the boom starts moving.
In the first picture, you can see the thick outrigger feet behind the driver's seat and at the back of the truck bed.

A bucket that blocks electricity near power lines

Some Cherry pickers that work near power lines are called insulated types.
The bucket and the part of the boom closest to it are made of materials that block electricity so workers do not get shocked.
The second coloring page shows a scene where the truck is on a road, raising its bucket to the top of a utility pole to do some work.
Many electric wires stretch across the sky, and the bucket reaches right up next to the top of the pole.
There are traffic cones lined up around the vehicle, and the outrigger feet rest on square plates.
You can see the stripes of a crosswalk at its wheels, so you know it is working on a city street.

Taking a break in the farm field

The third page shows Cherry picker parked in a farm field.
The boom is folded down, and the bucket rests above the driver's seat.
Behind the truck bed, there are traffic cones and outrigger feet, with fluffy clouds in the sky and gentle hills rolling in the distance.
It is a peaceful scene before heading off to the next job!

How to Color Cherry picker

Color the bucket in the brightest color!

The main feature of a Cherry picker is the bucket at the tip of the boom.
Pick a different color from the body and color it so the bucket pops out!
If you make the body white and the bucket yellow or orange, it will be easy to spot even way up high.
You can use any colors you like for your coloring page, so it is fun to invent your very own color combos!

Change the shade on each side of the long boom

The boom looks like a long box, so try using lighter and darker shades for the top and sides to make it look 3D.
The trick is to color the top side light and the side dark.
It has lots of straight lines, so move your colored pencil in the same direction along the lines to color it neatly!

Outrigger legs and safety cones

Color the outrigger legs light gray to make them look like real metal.
If you color the safety cones red or orange in the second and third pictures, everyone can tell where the work is happening!
The cones in the third picture have stripes, so color them in alternating red and white to look just like real life!

The sky, power lines, and field scenery

In the second picture, color the sky light blue and then trace the power lines in black or dark gray to show just how high the bucket goes!
Leave the crosswalk white and color the road gray so the stripes stand out clearly.
In the third picture, color the field brown, the grass green, the hills light green, and leave the clouds white!

Fun Facts About Cherry picker

Cherry picker comes from picking cherries

In English, aerial work platforms are sometimes called a Cherry picker.
Cherry means cherry in English.
In 1944, a man named Jay Eitel in America got tired of picking cherries on a ladder. It is said that he came up with a machine to lift people up high, and that is how it started.
Later, telephone and electric companies started using this machine, too.

Driving licenses change with height

To move the work platform on an aerial work platform, you must take special training.
By law, if the platform goes up to a height of 10 meters or more, you need "Skill Training." If it is lower than 10 meters, you need "Special Education."
To drive it on the road, you also need a separate driver's license that matches the weight of the truck.
There are many rules to work safely in high places, aren't there?

Arm shapes come in many types

Some arms of aerial work platforms extend straight out like a tube. Others bend in the middle like an elbow.
There are also ones where the work platform moves straight up and down like an elevator.
The type that lifts up with crisscross supports like stacked scissors is called a scissor lift.
The best shape is chosen to match the place where it works!
