About Eiffel Tower

The Symbol Tower of Paris

The Eiffel Tower is a tower made of iron that stands in Paris, the capital of France.
It was built in 1889 for the World's Fair held in Paris.
The fair was to celebrate 100 years since the French Revolution.
A company led by a man named Gustave Eiffel built it, which is how it got the name Eiffel Tower.

Some People Were Against It at First

When the Eiffel Tower was built, it was about 300 meters tall. That made it the tallest building in the world at the time!
Now, with an antenna on top, it is about 330 meters tall.
When it was first built, some people were against it. They thought an iron tower did not fit the city of Paris.
But today, it is the most famous symbol of Paris.

The City of Paris and the Eiffel Tower

The first coloring page shows the Eiffel Tower and the city of Paris seen from high up.
You can see its four legs spread out wide at the bottom and get thinner as they go up.
There are two observation decks along the way.
In front, a long narrow pond with fountains and a garden stretch out toward the tower.

Looking Up from Right Below the Tower

The second page shows what it looks like to look up at the big arch from right beneath the Eiffel Tower.
The legs and the arch are made of steel beams set at angles, like a net.
Beyond the arch, you can see a building split into left and right sides called the Palais de Chaillot.
The Eiffel Tower, along with famous spots along the Seine River, is a World Heritage site called "Paris, Banks of the Seine."

The View from the Observation Decks

The Eiffel Tower has observation decks at different heights. You can go up by elevator or stairs!
From the top observation deck, you can look out over the Seine River, the Arc de Triomphe, and the city of Paris with all its buildings.
At night, lights turn on, and you can see the tower shine in the Paris night sky.
The wide platform on the second coloring page is the lowest observation deck.
The people of Paris are very proud of the Eiffel Tower.
Looking up at the Eiffel Tower from a boat on the Seine River is also a popular sight.

How to Color Eiffel Tower

The tower is a yellowish-brown color

The Eiffel Tower today is a yellowish-brown color, like a golden brown.
It was repainted in a color said to be chosen by Eiffel to match the stone buildings of Paris.
If you color it with ochre first and add brown over the shadowy parts, it will look just like an iron tower.
If you color the spaces in the iron frame with the sky's color, you can see right through it!

Take your time with the frame spaces

The iron frame spaces on the second sheet have a lot of tiny parts.
Sharpen the tip of your colored pencil and color them little by little.
If you leave a little bit of white instead of coloring everything, it will shine like light is hitting it!

The sky of Paris and green gardens

Color the sky light blue, leave the clouds white, and trace their edges with light gray.
Try coloring the garden lawn and trees on the first sheet with yellow-green and green, and the pond with light blue.
If you want to make an evening scene, make the sky orange or pink to draw a lovely Paris sunset!
Line it up with the Mont Saint-Michel coloring page or the Statue of Liberty coloring page, and enjoy famous spots related to France!

Try coloring the Eiffel Tower at night, too

If you want to make a night scene, try coloring the sky with dark blue or purple.
If you color the tower yellow or orange, it becomes the Eiffel Tower lit up at night!
It is also fun to color both the day and night sheets and compare them.
Leaving white stars scattered in the night sky looks wonderful, too.
Color the buildings beyond the arch on the second sheet with light beige.

Fun Facts About Eiffel Tower

Repainted Every 7 Years

The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, so people repaint it to keep it from rusting.
It has been repainted many times so far, about once every 7 years on average.
Each time it is painted, the color of the tower sometimes changes a little bit!

The Same Person Worked on the Statue of Liberty

Gustave Eiffel also made the metal frame inside the Statue of Liberty in New York.
An iron frame on the inside holds up the thin copper sheets on the outside of the statue.
It is amazing that the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty were built using skills from the same person!

Tens of Thousands of Iron Parts

The Eiffel Tower was built by making iron parts in a factory and putting them together at the site.
Millions of iron pin-like fasteners called rivets were used to connect the parts.
Putting so many parts together in just about two years surprised people back then very much!
At first, people planned to tear it down after 20 years, but it stayed because it was useful as a radio tower.
