About Christmas Stocking

A Big Stocking for Presents

A Christmas Stocking is a big stocking that you hang up on Christmas Eve night.
People say that when morning comes, you will find presents and treats inside.
In English, it is called a Christmas Stocking.
Many of them are made of red or green cloth with soft, fluffy white trim at the top.

The Story of the Christmas Stocking

They say the tradition of putting presents in a Christmas Stocking comes from a story about Saint Nicholas.
Long ago, Saint Nicholas dropped gold coins down a chimney at night to help three poor sisters.
It is said that the gold coins landed inside stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry.
That is how the tradition of hanging up a Christmas Stocking for Christmas spread everywhere.

Shoes in Some Countries

Some countries put out shoes instead of a Christmas Stocking.
In places like the Netherlands, children set out their shoes the night before Saint Nicholas Day to find treats inside.
In Japan, some kids leave their Christmas Stocking by their pillow instead.

Three Coloring Pages

There are 3 coloring pages.
The first page shows 1 big Christmas Stocking decorated with holly and bells.
You can see a candy cane and a present box peeking out from inside.
The second page shows 3 Christmas Stockings hanging on a brick fireplace.
The third page is a detailed coloring page with a row of 3 Christmas Stockings that have knitted patterns of snowflakes and reindeer.

Make Your Own Christmas Stocking

You can also make your own Christmas Stocking using felt or yarn.
It is easy to make by cutting out 2 stocking-shaped pieces of cloth and sewing the edges together.
If you add buttons, ribbons, or holly decorations, it becomes your very own special Christmas Stocking.
It is also fun to color the coloring page, cut out the Christmas Stocking shape, and hang it on your wall!

How to Color Christmas Stocking

Red and White for Christmas

Color the Christmas Stocking red and leave the fluffy cuff white.
If you make the heel and toe green, you get classic Christmas colors!
Adding just a little light gray to the fluffy cuff makes it look soft.

Holly and Bells

Try coloring the holly leaves dark green and the round berries red.
Make the bells yellow or gold, and leave a white dot in the middle to make them shine!
Make the candy cane striped with red and white.

Fireplace Fire and Bricks

For the fireplace bricks in the second coloring page, try using red-brown and orange. If you change the colors just a little for each brick, it will look real!
For the flames, make the middle yellow and the outside orange or red to make a warm fire.

Knit Patterns: Start with the Base Color

For the knit pattern in the third coloring page, color the base color of the Christmas Stocking first, then add different colors to the pattern parts.
Leave the snowflakes white and color around them with red or navy blue to make the pattern pop!
If you change the color for each row, it will look like a cozy hand-knit Christmas Stocking.

Stuffed Animals and Toys

For the toys peeking out of the Christmas Stocking in the second coloring page, use any colors you like! You can make a brown bear or a red and blue toy train.
Using lots of different colors for the toys makes the Christmas Stocking look super exciting inside!

Fun Facts About Christmas Stocking

Fireplaces and Chimneys

Homes in Europe and America often have a fireplace.
People say Santa Claus comes down the chimney, so many people hang their Christmas Stocking near the fireplace.
If a house does not have a fireplace, people hang it on their bed, on a wall, or near the tree.

What Is Inside the Christmas Stocking?

Inside the Christmas Stocking, you can often find small toys, treats, and fruit.
Long ago, people sometimes put oranges or clementines inside.
Some people say it is because the round, yellow fruit looks like the gold coins from the story.

A Christmas Stocking with Your Name

Some families get a Christmas Stocking for everyone and sew each person's name on theirs.
Decide whose Christmas Stocking this is on your coloring page, and try using different colors for each family member!

The Bigger the Christmas Stocking...?

The bigger your Christmas Stocking is, the more things might fit inside!
But pick a good, medium-sized Christmas Stocking so Santa Claus does not have a hard time.
